Beret

Beret – A city of 17,000 located in southern Karmis sitting at the junction of the two main southern tributaries of the River Karm making the city a rough triangle. The city is a busy river port thanks to both rivers being navigable for many miles south of the city. Beret is well-fortified with 15’ walls facing both rivers and intersecting at River Watch Keep at the junction of the two rivers. On the landward side of the city, a 20’ wall with a single strongly fortified gate and a water filled moat protect the approach. Two water gates feed into a central basin at the foot of the River Watch Keep. The gates can both accommodate mid-sized barges, although sailing vessels with a mast higher than 15’ feet will not be able to enter. The basin is surrounded by a complex of warehouses, inns, boat wrights and rope sheds. Space is at a premium in Beret so home and business owners tend to build upward with structures often reaching five stories in height. A well-built stone and wood bridge crosses the western tributary carry the north-south road that connects Helden to Meles. The road enters the city through the western river gate. The eastern gate leads onto a stone embankment which services rivercraft that are too large to enter the water gates. Beret is governed by an appointed governor advised by a city council. Typically, the Imperial army will have a company of cavalry and two of foot posted at the city barracks. In an emergency they can be supplemented by the city militia. The militia is primarily armed with crossbows and polearms. The Alyite Order maintains a chapter house that typically houses 10-30 Alyite sisters. The city’s trade is heavily based on grain and cattle from the surrounding farmland. The city’s craftspeople are well known for quality leather goods and boots. The greatest mercantile attraction is the city’s thriving spice market which mainly deals in products imported from the lands south of the Spine.
