Armahan

Armahan is considered the greatest city of the northwest. The city is approximately 700 years old having originlly been estalbished by coastal traders seeking to exploit the resources of the northwest. A city of more than 100,000, it is a great port, a center of education, a place of great wealth and the capital of the Kingdom of Armahan. The city sits of the north side of the estuary of the River Granthos. The Granthos provides a natural highway into the western interior while its location is also near enough the the western trade to profit from the extensive coastal trade in the region.   The city is a hub of mercantile activity including trade in iron, wool, leather, lumber and grain. Its riverside docks are also home to several shipyards, numerous warehouses and businesses that serve the ship outfitting trade.

Demographics

The city's majoirty consists of roughly 100,000 Northron humans. The remainder includes a community of about 3,000 Eskill, 2,000 Danites and 10,000 Northron Corgerians

Government

The kingdom of Armhan is a feudal monarchy with local government being managed by the High Council of the Royal City.

Defences

The city is walled generally following the contours of the long bluff that the majority of the city is built on. The riverside docklands are cut off from the rest of the city by a defensive wall built about 400' inland from the river front. Access to the docklands is given through four strongly built gatehouses most of which are closed at night. The northern side of the wall, which is the longest stretch, follows a cliff ranging from 20'-30' in height for most of the cities east-west length.

Industry & Trade

The city seems to be home to almost any major industry civilization has developed. Shipbuilding, metalwork, dying, leather work and glass making are all major trades.

Infrastructure

The established districts of the city have streets paved by cobblestones and storm sewers that run towards the river. The city's gentle upward slope towards the north helps facilitate southward drainage. Major building complexes include the Royal Palace on Lamarth Hill, a mass of a dozen great temples around King's Square in the center of the city, a great warehouse, dock and shipyard complex along the. Many of the more recently built districts have walls around them as the city government simple builds gatehouses to open communications with new districts then builds new outward facing walls. Some sections of older wall facing interior districts have been demolished to facilitate new building projects and have their stonework recycled for new construction. The eastern side of the city is defined by the Silver River which is crossed by no less than three well-built bridges leading to nearby agricultural villages and the road that follows the river to the east.

Guilds and Factions

The dozen powerful merchant houses, often referred to as the Twelve Golden Houses dominate the cities commercial life. Most of the kingdom's significant noble houses have residences in the city, some of these are full-time residences and others are used during the social season that stretches from mid-fall to early spring. Finally, the Kingdom's Royal government has its headquarters here, although the Royal Clan decamps for its country estates during the summer months.

Architecture

The established districts of the city are made up of stone or brick buildings with high pitched slate or tile covered roofs. The less established districts have buildings made from wattle and daub roofed with wooden shingles. The pattern is as these areas periodically get burned town they are replaced by buildings made of more durable and fireproof materials.
