Tingley Settlement in Colossus | World Anvil

Tingley

Its easy to miss as towns go. Folk using the sky port high above, making their way to the cities across the Glass Deserts.   There is nothing between Tingley and the jewels of the dunes. None travel too or from the town. It started as an expedition hamlet. For those stopping off before descending into the Shadowfell, found at the deepest part of the Grey Hills stretching away from Tingley.   Named after the first tavern owner it grew to a decent size town that takes care of its own and shuns outsiders, as rare as they are.   The surrounding land is healthy enough to farm in small amounts and keeps the folks of Tingley fed, water is a different mater though. The only source is a river that runs down the Grey Hills and out of sight.   Further down the river the water is thicker with minerals from the Shadowfell. Its dangerous to drink, albeit the odd few have and either died or their constitutions have resisted and the benefits of the Shadows have clung to their being.   Children of Tingley look after themselves mainly, learning how to make weapons from branches, living day by day on their imaginations. Most live until old age, unless they chance the river.    The Shadowfell is always the topic of conversation in the minds of the youth.   Some are lucky enough to learn minor alchemy and crafts aiding the elders. Every so often one will have the skill to cast a cantrip a couple of times a day and this becomes the moments entertainment.   If adventures do happen to come through the town, maybe questing in the Shadowfell they are likely to have the cheapest rest of their lives, or have the blade of a thief resting against their throat as they sleep.

I like the idea of an expedition outpost becoming a town surviving where many have not. The river sounds intriguing, and I wonder if there is a way to purify the water to make it safe to drink. The small community seems suspicious of outsiders. There must be some history here, or perhaps the town is hiding a great treasure.

Hi FalconX, I have only just seen this, sorry still finding my way around, thank you for your comments, I leant towards the town deliberately not cleansing the river, I was going towards those that drink from it is part of a tradition, coming of age ritual type thing :)

It's Gravy Time!!
