Mist Reader Profession in Colossus | World Anvil

Mist Reader

Most can make ends meet by trading what they have to offer for what another has to offer, others will earn coin for their service given.    A common routine among folk living in towns and villages.    But for those that turn away from such simple works there is a role that can bring wealth beyond ones wildest dreams.   Mist Reading is a trade that some associate with mysticism and the occult. However the closest thing it could be compared to is mining.    Mist Readers must travel to the edges of reality, where the mist is thinnest. Found at the joining of the many planes and realms of Colossus.    Found high in the mountains, deep in the oceans, frozen among the tundra of snow and ice and any other place one can think of that taking a hike would mean death.    Travelling in groups of two or three, sharing the coin they make to maintain the celestial blessed glass scalpels used to cut at the Mist. As coal miner would swing a pickaxe the Mist Reader delicately slice pieces away.   In the life time of a Mist Reader they can have stepped in the realms of the Fey, the elementals and sometimes even the light of a Celestial realm will grace the Mist they collect.    The Reading part of their role is unique. It is not something an elder can teach a youngling, it can only be learned by spending time in the Mists. Absorbing its unique language, learning the shapes of its letters.   Among these scriptures the Mist Readers can touch the magics of Divination. Not like a Arcane practitioner would, but more of a chat among friends.   Mist Readers are on the road, searching the furthest points they can reach. After months of collecting they return to the cities to sell the potent resource and trade futures for silver.
