Jotun

Descendants of the giants and Cyclopes who once lived in Iobaria, Jotun are rarely seen outside of the country where they live in the northern reaches. Their skin ranges from white to blue, and their hair, although commonly black, blue, grey, or black, can be of other colors according to their descent. They easily tower over most humans, a testament to the Giant blood in their veins. They love the life of adventurer and enjoy learning about bits and pieces of everything, and trying out new things.   They are true friends, loyal to the bones, and willing to sacrifice all they have and all they are for a worthy cause or friend.   They favor practical clothes of leather and coarse cloth, but they love anything well-crafted, whether it be a song, clothes, jewelry or a fine house.   Jotunnar find great joy in the lifestyle of the adventurer. The drinking, feasting, and the chance to become part of a great tale are a siren’s call to their nature. Further appeal comes from the chance of challenging oneselves from wrestling with dragons, to tossing boulders with the Titans; and consider every battle to be the greatest of sport. Many also use this as a chance to explore our elemental nature. The few that peruse a different path often choose the life of an adventurer so as to avoid the stigma of giantish society.

Their last names are often composed of "Son of" or "Daughter of," although, with their numbers being so few, and the concept of family being so weak for them, they will often avoid even saying their last them for they consider it part of their burden.   Example (female): Bragidottir, Havardottir, Kardottir, Orokiadottir, Svafardottir   Example (male): Authunsson, Brodirsson, Gunnisson, Hamundsson, Sæmundsson, Skulisson

Other names

Jotun often choose for themselves a nickname that they feel fit better their personality. These will often have to do with the weather, nature, or war, although other nicknames have found their way in their world.   Examples: Icewind, Fallen Leaf, Axebreaker, etc.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

Jotun speak Iobarian and Giant, but as they travel the Crown of the World, they are in contact with other races and cultures.

Culture and cultural heritage

Descending from the Giants that once lived in these lands, they keep knicks and knacks of their culture and heritage. They tend to dislike dragons and Drakhen for they have pushed them to the very edge of the Ice Steppes.   Most of their culture survives through their songs and poems, most Jotun finding no time to write lengthy books about their past. As they have survived for so long, they feel that their culture will forever escape death.

Shared customary codes and values

When a Jotun loses a battle, it's customary to cut their hair. Short hair usually means a recent loss, and generally, the temper that comes with it.   The majority jotun are Lawful Neutral. However, those who embrace a specific aspect of their giantish nature often adopt the outlook of that lineage. For example, a jotun who embraced the aspect of storm would most likely become chaotic good in the same manner an aspect of the troll might become chaotic evil. Yet these are the standard bearers and there are always glorious rebels seeking to make their own path. The jotun worship all gods as a pantheon, each one controlling an aspect of reality and each one worthy of the same level of devotion. Favored deities tend to be gods of feasting, drinking (wine and ale), adventure, laughter, joy, hedonism, avarice, gluttony, pride, battle, glory, and gods of the elements, and gods of the earth, sea, and sky.

Birth & Baptismal Rites

When a child is born, it is marked by a rune that represents something important to the date of its birth (it could be a location, another's heroic achievement, the weather, etc.) The child is then given to a family who will be able to care for it (not always their parents).

Coming of Age Rites

As soon as a child Jotun reaches his teenage years (more or less 30 years), they leave the nest and decides what it is that they want to learn about and do, finding a way to carve their own path to their end goal. This is where their most lasting friendships are created.

Funerary and Memorial customs

When a Jotun dies, it returns to the earth. They often try to find Cyclops or Giant ruins where they may spend their final days. If they pass unexpectedly or die on the battlefield, another Jotun should play the drums until the earth shakes, so that it may rejoin the other Jotuns.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

Jotun find beauty in art and in strength. They value bards and artist among their people. To be considered beautiful among the Jotun, one must have lived life. As such, they considered scars and other markings as beautiful. They favor long hair for both men and women: As when one loses a duel or an important battle, they cut their own hair, or their opponent does that for them, long hair is seen as a mark of valor and is a desired traits.

Gender Ideals

Men and women stand on equal footing, children are often raised until their middle age by their family (not necessarily all Jotun), this gives a sense of freedom to women, compared to human standards.
