Hobgoblin

Hobgoblins are a goblinoid race of raiders and pillagers, taking what they need with steel and fire from more advanced cultures before vanishing back into the wilds, slaves and plunder in tow. Hobgoblins stand on average a few inches shorter than humans. Grey leather skin is mared with marks of their conquests and past training. They naturally have no hair (on their head or otherwise) and their eyes seem to glow slightly, in shades of yellow, orange and red. Bulky with longish arms and a protruding lower jaw, they are somewhat apelike and are often mocked by other races for their appearance.   For what they lack in refinement, they are very highly organized in a strict and militaristic hierarchy. They are territorial and always seek to expand their territory, even if it means going to war with other creatures. They have been present in Iobaria for a few centuries, arriving from the east during the turmoil of the war.

Unisex names

Hobgoblins barely make a distinction between male and female. As such, all names are considered unisex. They're all composed of hard letters (k, d, g, y) and when pronounced by a human, it's never quite right.   Examples: Krotruk, Krevrong, Norgrun, Duttak, Ivtom, Ugheng, Kavlem, Hektem, Iglen, Hattik, Uyre, Phonim, Mense, Bomgun, Monset, Hiykum, Fiste, Zomzos

Hobgoblins do not have family names, or family, for that matter.

Culture

Culture and cultural heritage

Most hobgoblins hate arcane magic due to its association with their deadly enemies, the elves. In its place, hobgoblins commonly employ science and alchemy, especially that which produces smoke and fire, which they love (a throwback to their goblin forebears). Burning oil, rigged mineshafts, and explosives are among the tricks of hobgoblin alchemy and engineering.[2]   Some hobgoblins practice divine magic as shamans, typically of cruel powers like Asmodeus and the other archdevils like General Susumu, and Yaezhing. Such shamans are both feared and respected, and often forced to live alone on the tribe's outskirts.

Hobgoblins are generally Lawful Evil and they follow a strict hierarchy, believing in order among their ranks, coveting first and foremost their social status.

Average technological level

Hobgoblins are considered to be more technologically advanced that other races of Iobaria because they forego the use of arcane magic and prefer the use of alchemy and engineering.

Common Dress code

Hair is important in hobgoblin culture, especially among warriors. Hair emulates the barghests and hero-gods that hobgoblins honor, and long, flowing hair is a resource that must be taken in battle—a hobgoblin can neither grow a mane of hair, nor skin hair—real hair—from animals in the hunt. Instead warriors strip a lock of hair from each human and elf they kill, and weave them into their hats or helms or else glue them to their own scalps.

Coming of Age Rites

Infants are weaned after only three weeks and can walk and talk by six months, at which point he or she begins combat training. A hobgoblin is considered ready to fight by the age of four. After reaching maturity, all hobgoblins are subjected to the "year of hell", a year of constant raiding intended to test each hobgoblin's strength and courage. Roughly one in three hobgoblins is then deemed fit for active combat duty; the remainder are relegated to the position of general labor.

Beauty Ideals

Warlike and generally feuding, Hobgoblins do not have beauty standards per se. They see reproduction as a practical matter and do not see practicality in beauty. They have very little care for their appearance of that of others, usually judging other races who like pretty things and considering them as petty.

Relationship Ideals

Hobgoblins mate freely, but only with willing members of their own rank—matings between hobgoblins of different rank is seen as scornful. Hobgoblins are highly promiscuous and do not practice monogamy. Hobgoblins gestate much faster than humans (though not as fast as goblins).

Racial Traits Ability Scores: Hobgoblins are fast and hardy. They gain +2 Dexterity, and +2 Constitution.
Authoritative: Hobgoblins often develop a knack for controlling others. They gain a +2 racial bonus on Diplomacy and Intimidate checks. Both skills are always class skills for them.

Mage Hunter: Hobgoblins hate and fear arcane casters. A magehunter gains a +2 racial bonus on Spellcraft checks made to identify a spell being cast and a +1 racial bonus on attack rolls against arcane spellcasters. He only gains this bonus against creatures that use spells, and not against those that only use spell-like abilities.

Sneaky: Hobgoblins receive a +4 racial bonus on Stealth checks.
