Centaur

Skilled hunters and warriors, centaurs are have the upper body of a human and the lower torso of a horse. This savage race lives in tribes on the fringes of human civilisation. They vary widely in appearance and several tribes and even are present in Iobaria. Their tense relationships with humans means that most Iobarians are unable (or refuse) to distinguish their different ethnicities. The three main ethnicities are:
  • Azorva: They are the stockiest and hardiest of the centaurs. Aside from physical strength, they also have a darker skin and coat hue. They dwell almost exclusively in the rugged highlands and mountains of that land.
  • Rashalka: The most numerous and common of the three primary Iobarian ethnicities, these centaurs are the most similar to the more well-known centaurs of the Inner Sea. The Rashalka are split into a large number of smaller clans or tribes who share certain territory, such as Hoofwood.
  • Tsolvina: One of the three major centaur ethnicities in the region, the Tsolniva centaurs are known for being one of the more ruthless centaur groups. They typically dwell an area just north of Hoofwood, where they maintain a relative peace with the milder Rashalka clans. These clans resort to raiding their southern kin, and are known for their ferocity and barbarity. Tsolniva centaurs most notable feature is their hairiness. The hair on their torsos is nearly as thick and long as the coats covering the rest of their bodies.

Feminine names

Examples: Calathe, Kydialla, Myrale, Kassiphae, Dynassa, Calanie, Monythia, Anastiore, Hyrasia, Penthiphae

Masculine names

Examples: Caloire, Arteithes, Kyraros, Inobus, Altite, Cadmaeon, Tymeimon, Adous, Alantes, Calone

Family names

Centaurs bear names that are reminiscent of Iblydos, the kindgom from whence they came, a long time ago. Over time, the names have become shorter, but in essence remain very similar to those of their distant ancestors. They bear no family name, only their clan's name.

Major language groups and dialects

Centaurs of Iobaria speak Iobarian and the Sylvan languages shared with other fey-like creatures.

Culture and cultural heritage

The Centaurs are said to originate from the island kingdom of Iblydos, of which remains nothing to this day.

Shared customary codes and values

Tribe, clan and family are more important to Centaur than is the concept of love or the individual. Similarly, they are expected to withhold tradition and protect their lands, which they often consider their heritage. They are isolationist and have few contacts with other races, and those who choose the urban life or to meddle with other races, are often shun from their clans.

Average technological level

Centaurs as they currently exist have yet to achieve the sail age and are caught in perpetual medieval time.

Common Taboos

They frown upon interacting with other cultures, but mostly with adopting traits from other cultures, most of which humans and Jotun which they particularly detest. Following any of these traditions (even something as simple as celebrating one's birthday) is a taboo.

Ideals

Gender Ideals

The elderly are expected to care for the youth while their parents are free to go about their occupation. Both male and female centaurs are expected to know how to fight and withhold traditions. Men are oftentimes called upon the worship traditions, while women are the craftsmen creating weapon from all and any material they can find. The youth who cannot yet fight, and the elderly, provide food.   Their ideals are not based on gender: their tribes act as clans, where every one of its member is neither seen as a man or a woman, but as an important piece.

Relationship Ideals

Centaurs are open to relationships with several people and do not comprehend the need for other races to "brand" others as their possession, devoting their life to a sole person.

Fast Speed: Centaurs have a base speed of 40 ft.

Quadruped: Quadrupeds can carry heavier loads than bipeds can. Multiply the values corresponding to the creature’s Strength score from Table: Carrying Capacity by the appropriate modifier, as follows: Fine ×1/4, Diminutive ×1/2, Tiny ×3/4, Small ×1, Medium ×1-1/2, Large ×3, Huge ×6, Gargantuan ×12, Colossal ×24.
