The Vhu Species in Colarn | World Anvil

The Vhu

The Vhu are small, white furred creatures that live in the frozen wastes of Paltroy. They are quadrupeds that grow between 12 and 18 inches in height and weigh between 15 and 25 pounds on average with a length of between 2 and 3 feet from nose to tail. Their long ears make them commonly mistaken for winter hares, but upon closer inspection there are differences. Their faces are much narrower in shape than a rabbit, and their legs and feet are shaped more like a dog’s. The Vhu are also very fast and intelligent. They collect anything small and metallic that they come across. They will take these items and bring them to their underground warrens. These warrens are a series of interconnected caves in which small communities of Vhu reside. Not much research has been done on these creatures as they only seem to reside in the most inhospitable region or the most inhospitable country on Colarn. Old notes written Karinas Holstmir, a well-known naturalist in his time, made references to Vhu’s ability to cooperate and compared these warrens to small villages, though there didn’t seem to be a “mayor” or “town guards”. Everyone contributed to the bigger community by bringing food back to share with the greater community. Vhu subsist on a diet of burrowing insects and underground roots and mushrooms. The warrens that Holstmir observed were also built near underground natural springs. The Vhu also appeared to have no natural enemies. They stayed to themselves and appeared too intelligent to let the bigger predators catch them. Well-honed senses kept them aware of a predator’s approach long before the predator even knew that they were there. Holstmir also theorized that Vhu knew that he was watching the entire length of his research and simply allowed him to observe, not seeing him as a threat.
