The Mandarlo Wastes

The Mandarlo wastes lie on the continent of Rodico. Much of the continent is barren and inhospitable and yet some communities thrive there. The Mandarlo is an arid, sandy desert and is unclaimed by any of the city-states in the area. There is little to exploit there, and the local governments don’t see it as worth the trouble of trying to settle. Several small villages dot the sandy landscape, with some trading with each other. Many choose to live in such conditions to escape the confines of life in larger communities and to not have to pay taxes. People in the area live eat duralo, a hardy, desert growing plant that can be grown and harvested despite the harsh environment. Other people that come to these wastes are those that would evade capture. Bandits, rogues, and fugitives from all around the world come here to hide out. Bent Nail is a community hidden somewhere deep in the waste and is a haven for such people. Though they live and cooperate (after a fashion). There is no leader amongst them. There are those that garner more respect than others and as a result can recruit others to join their causes, which range from banditry to violent revolutions. If any single leader rose to take control of Bent Nail, they would command an army of thousands. The Hanash, also known as the desert giants, have a conclave in the wastes. Thousands of years earlier the Hanash had a kingdom, but a major disaster caused a rift to open in the ground and swallow up their capital city of Ganur. Their kingdom was broken, but many Hanash survived. They were never able to regain their former glory, but enough of the city was repaired for what was left of their people to live in. They still have a monarchy, but their leaders’ power pales when compared to what they lost. Unlike many giants that appear to look like exceptionally large humanoids, the Hanesh, instead look more reptilian. They have two arms, two legs, a torso, and a head, but their skin is scaley and their heads resemble a king cobra snake. The Hanesh steer clear of others, wishing to be left alone, but any trespassers that enter their territory are immediately killed without mercy.
