The Larune

The Larune are a race far more ancient than even the elves. Some scholars believe that they are the ones that created magic. Others believe that they create magic but were the first to use it and harness it and taught the other races. The Larune people began to decline as a civilization around the time of the founding of the Kellerian Empire, though they did not disappear completely for another 5 millennia. A normal Larune stood around 6 feet in height and had a hard armored carapace around their bodies which made it look like they were always wearing chitinous armor. They had one head, two arms and two legs and very long, dexterous fingers. The Larune were the only people that the elves did not consider themselves superior to and before the Larune disappeared completely, some of the last few known remaining individuals were rumored to have lived amongst the Elarisein elves in their cities, where they spent the rest of their days continuing their magical research and living in safety and comfort. Scholars and historians are divided on what caused their extinction. Some believe that the Kellerian Empire wiped them out and that their numbers had decreased so much from the conflict that the population could not be adequately repopulated or sustained. Many dismiss that theory though, because though they believe that it’s possible that someone decimated their numbers to that level, it’s unlikely that the Empire, even today could accomplish such a thing, for how advanced the Larune were. Larune artifacts are rare, but easy to identify. There are no makers’ marks on them like you may see on an ancient magical weapon or even more mundane items. A Larune crafted item is typically metallic and shiny despite the age of the item. Scholars find it difficult to ascertain the purpose on any of these artifacts that they find, but when they do get lucky they find that though the item has power, they can’t recharge it after the energy has been spent as they can normal magical items The top arcane minds the world over can’t even begin to guess what kind of magical energy is employed as it is unlike anything they had ever seen before.
