Solidrium Material in Colarn | World Anvil

Solidrium

Solidrium is an element that is rarely seen on the surface of Colarn. Where it does appear is mostly on deserted tropical islands and when it is found it is widely considered to be useless. Most natives of Colarn who have encountered it say that it glows in a pretty way when the sun hits it just right, but it's nearly useless as a spellcasting reagent and has no practical building material use, When the people of Askaria discovered it, they found it to be one of the most important scientific discoveries of all time, The Askarians rely on their steam driven technology for both their domestic and military needs which gives them a different standard of living from the rest of Colarn who are several centuries behind Askaria technologically. Because the people of Askaria did not develop on a world of magic, they have no spellcasters and no experience working with magic. The discovery of solidrium changed all of that with its ability to fuse magical energy with their technology. The metal has the unique ability to add a "magical charge" to any machine it's connected to. With this element they have been able to create smaller, but more powerful electrical generators and devices, experiment with energy barriers and create their own versions of magical weapons. An example of an Askarian magical weapon functioning with solidrium would be what's called a Charge Blade. It is a sword that has solidrium alloy forged into the blade. Built into the hilt of the weapon is where you would put the charges, which look like small cylindrical pieces of solidrium. Each Charge Weapon can hold between 8 and 10 charges within the handle, depending on the weapon. When the wielder strike's its target with the blade, a button can be pushed to expend the charge, which travels instantaneously up the blade and into the target. Different charges can be applied such as fire, electrical and cold charges. Once all the charges have been expended the wielder will need to reload the weapon in order to regain the magical effects. Very large deposits of Solidrium have been found under the sea several hundred feet below the surface. Askarian submersible drilling rigs must go down to mine it, but the pressure of the water remains an issue as the constant mining has required the submersibles to need to dive deeper and deeper to find new deposits. There is also threats of sea creatures and the aquatic race known as the Nauticans, who have had a hatred for the Askarians since they had arrived on Colarn.
