Askaria’s Electrical Power Plant Operators

Before Askar, the capital city of what is now Askaria, was magically transported to Colarn, the people who lived there relied on massive mechanical generators to produce electricity for their needs. An entire district of Askar was dedicated to housing and maintaining the massive structures that would power the rest of the city. Each of the structures would require several hundred people to operate and repair them as necessary. The Battery District, as it was called back then, employed, and housed tens of thousands of these personnel. When the Arcane Bridge event happened and Askar was yanked off their home world and brought to Colarn, all the plants in the Battery District were used to accomplish this and, in the process, nearly all the electricity producing buildings were destroyed beyond repair. After the event, those workers that didn’t die when their district exploded, had the nearly impossible task of trying to get power to the city from the few power generators that they could get working again. After some time on Colarn, Askarian scientists found new ways to create electricity by combining new elements found in the new world and this strange energy source called magic. Within the first 20 years of living on Colarn, they had come up with new generators that were smaller, far cheaper, and faster to make and required very little maintenance. Each generator was the size of a small crate and put out between 5 and 10 times more energy than even their largest power producing plants of old, and it would only take one technician to service several of these devices. With these new devices came many changes. Instead of putting all their electrical generators in one place and thus leaving the entire grid vulnerable to attack, they would spread the devices throughout all the other districts. Each district would have many devices of their own and if any were destroyed, the power load could be shared from other devices to make up for the lack, even from other districts. This also made it much easier to expand colonial and military building efforts as the ease of making and transporting these generators simplified endeavors. With these new generators came an empty district and a lot of unemployment as these generators worked very differently from the generators that they knew, but a solution to the unemployment issue was easily dealt with. The establishment of other cities and towns in the new nation meant that a lot of labor was required and people with specialized mechanical skills that could be easily retrained were vital. The growing Askarian military also had a need of skilled workers such as they. As for the Battery District, it was cleaned up and the scrap reclaimed soon after it was destroyed. It stayed an empty district for over two centuries as any funding suggested to do something with the district was quickly reappropriated with the justification that the money was better spent in expanding the new nation. When King Bartholomew Maxwell ascended to the Askarian throne, he was able to convince the Parliament to open formal relations to the rest of Colarn and the old Battery District was made into the Foreign District, where the embassies of foreign nations and their wares and businesses would reside.
