The Interregum

Political event

13/47/04 - 28/47/04

With the death of Emperor-Elect Vahalian, The Palantine Court struggle to find a successor, instead running the Empire themselves.

When Vahalian died during The Second Uluk War, he left behind no children to inherit. The Palantine Court were paralyzed, for none of the other Elector-Counts seemed suitable for the role, nor could gather the required support to seize power.   Hanzig had long distanced themselves from political games while Leiden's corruption and ill-management left them eager for control but lacking in good-will or allies. Thedor would be no better than a military junta, seized by a coup, and Walden had long harboured secessionist sentiment, making their appointment foolhardy in the extreme.   With little other choice, they turned to the remaining Von Ruhr family. The brother of Vahalian, Luther, was an unmitigated idiot; a wastrel and dilletante with grand ambitions and little ability. The sister, Castina, was a much more palatable choice however. Brave, adventurous, and possessed of the dignified nature of her grandmother, she would easily rally the required support should she choose to stand.   Unfortunately, she had no interest in doing so. Happy to keep adventuring and exploring Amilyn, she refused to return to take up the mantle. Increasing pressure upon her family, however, led to a compromise. Her son, Vahalian Twice-Turned, would take up the throne when he turned of age, should that be what he desired. In the meantime, The Palantine Court would govern and instruct him in the arts of rulership for the next fifteen years.   Without any other choice, The Palantine Court agreed, and for the next decade would The Brazen Empire continue quietly and without fuss, the council incapable of agreeing on any major reforms or motions.
