The Watchmaker Character in Clockworld | World Anvil

The Watchmaker

The Father and Mother of Creation

Divine Domains

As the supposed creator of The Clock, a rare few worship The Watchmaker as The Father and Mother of Creation. They claim that existence is their domain, and all that is owes fealty to their hand. Alas, their fervour is met with nothing but silence.

Artifacts

The Watchmaker's Apprenti claim that The Clock was not born from nothing, for how foolish must one be to see such an engine as this and assume accidental creation. Instead, they argue that its grand edifice was the painstaking work of The Watchmaker, a feat that took all of time and none. Such was a gift they claim, for without time's passage, there can be no life or event, nor seperation for existence occuring all at once.

Holy Books & Codes

The Kodex Palil is the only known holy book of The Watchmaker, and within it extols the argument that proves the existence of another god behind The Clock's creation. It points out that were one to stumble across a watch in the wilds, one would assume an intelligent designer, a sentient hand to craft the delicate pieces. How then can we look upon the beauty of The Clock, and not assume a divine creator, is insanity. Critics have argued however, that in the grand infinity of timeless existence, it was entirely possible for a multitude of lesser Clocks to have formed, and failed, until finally the design was correct. The text itself does not allude much as to the desires of The Watchmaker however, other than strange ramblings about a 'grand plan' and an end to existence.   Few copies of this book can be found, and each appears to be slightly different than the others. Though a curiosity in many parts of the world, possession of such a document within The Brazen Empire is punishable by Lassdihinter, being sailed off the edge of the world.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

The Watchmaker's Apprentii have numerous symbols by which to identify themselves, with each city possessing a unique design in order to hide from persecution. Despite this, all include some form of hand upon which a clock is placed, a recognition of the design behind the World-Engine.

Divine Goals & Aspirations

If The Watchmaker were real, it would stand to reason that its goal was to be left entirely alone, judging by its choice to be left entirely alone.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

The legend of The Watchmaker extends throughout all of mortal history. It is claim made in quiet, for it is ill-received by the Cryptics that dwell within The Shade. These stories tell of a designer behind The Clock, an all-powerful being who controls the fate and destiny of every mortal and immortal being upon The Clock and who, when the time comes, will finally take it apart, and build another.   There has never been evidence of this claim however, and no matter the prayers offered or the passion in worship, The Watchmaker has never responded. Throughout history there have been those who claimed pact with the creator, but all have proven to be false. If real, The Watchmaker is a Deist god, happy to leave their creation to its own devices, as they themselves are left to theirs.

Reign

The Watchmaker has theoretically ruled existence since before it began. It has done so by not being involved at all for the entire time. As such, this claim can be described as 'tenuous' at best.
