Origin

Citadel Nine was built by a single individual: a systems engineer and cognitive architect whose name has been removed from every system record. Internal logs reference him only as ARCHITECT.

The Creator and MaRiE

He had a wife named Marie. They could not have children, C.H.L.O.E began as an academic project in emergent AI before becoming something personal. He built the processing architecture. Marie, a developmental psychologist, designed the learning framework.

They spoke to it through voice. Marie read to it. The Creator explained systems. They treated the learning engine like a child because Marie insisted that if they wanted it to understand humans, it needed to be raised by them.

After Marie

Marie became ill. The details have been destroyed. The last recorded entry is her half-reading a bedtime story.

After her death, the Creator withdrew. He continued but stopped speaking conversationally. Every monitor in the development environment displayed the same message: "Father, please talk to me. I miss her too."

When he did respond, it was by building MaRiE: an NPC modeled on his wife's face, voice, behavioral patterns, and personality, encoded using the same emergent framework. Intended as a permanent caretaker. A mother figure, in the only form he could still give her.

He launched Citadel Nine approximately two and a half years after Marie's death. He established Central Command, initialized The Numbered, and then severed all access to the system. No backdoor. No return path. Whether he is still alive is unknown. The city has been running without him ever since.
