The First Flight

The First Flight is important for almost all Avian cultures. Entomorians don't really celebrate their childs first flight as much but many still have something similar to this.    Every family has their own little traditions and ways to celebrate this special day but some things are universal. No matter which species, there is always a big celebration. Neighbours bring food and gifts, the families that can afford it like to get musicians involved (if they can't afford that, everyone has that one cousin that can play three songs on the flute and offers to play) and everyone has a good time.    Here's where things deviate from species to species:  Aderyn and other social species invite every guest along for the first flight, the part of the day when the child jumps off of the island into The Cloud for the first time, everyone gets to fly along, there's loud cheering and there won't be anyone in close proximity that won't know what's going on. For those species it's also not uncommon to have families that are close celebrate multiple childrens First Flights together.    Thalas and Aquila however are less social, for most of these families, the First Flight is too special to be shared with anyone outside of family and very close friends. The party before and afterwards are still the same size but the actual flying part is usually kept between the child, siblings, parents and other close family and friends. There's some cheering but it's more of a quiet happiness, less loud. For these species it's very rare that multiple children celebrate their First Flight together, it's something special for each child, every family tries to focus on their child, making sure it's a happy memory.    Many other species fall somewhere inbetween, there's no hard rule, just preferences. A Thalas child can request a big, communal flight and most parents would happily give them that and a shy Aderyn child can ask for only their close friends to be around, for that day, the child is king and can decide on how they want to spend the day.   In smaller kingdoms, the rulers make sure to honor each child with a pendant with a feather from the king or queen to invite them to be an official part of the kingdom (children who can't fly are protected and belong to every kingdom, no Avian would attack a flightless child). That is a nod to the old traditions of many Avians to leave for different kingdoms to learn as soon as they learn how to fly, that doesn't happen as much anymore, most stay for longer, but the feather of the ruler is meant to protect them and guide their way home if they need to.
