Iconoclasts Word Bearers Warband

Worshippers of Chaos, Despoilers of Realspace

With a millennia-long history and considerable number of followers, the Iconoclasts are the biggest (known) agent of Chaos in this region of the galaxy. With the Imperium's defences in disarray, they single handedly brought the sector to its knees, laid waste to many worlds and spread their Primordial Truth to even more. They operate from their Desecrator-class battleship Oathbreaker, which was originally gifted to them by their primarch Lorgar Aurelian himself.

Structure

The Iconoclasts Warband is split up into multiple Warhosts, whose Chaos Lords have sworn fealty to the Lord Ascendant Nergal. Although Nergal holds absolute authority over the whole of his warband, the respective warhosts are relatively free to govern themselves. Structure and leader titles vary wildly between the different hosts, especially the ones pledged to a specific god.

Warhost of the True Sons
As implied by the its name, these warriors stem from the geneline of primarch Lorgar and only true Word Bearers are granted the honour to join this warhost. They are the elite of the warband and knowing that, look down on the other warhosts, seeing them as less worthy. This holds especially true for the cult warhosts. While these are tolerated because they are just too useful, the True Sons pity them for restricting themselves to just one deity. Due to these differences in the internal hierarchy the True Sons are usually granted with priority access to raided supplies and wargear.

Warhost of the Thrice-Cursed
This warhost joined the Iconoclasts shortly before they reached the Umbra-Sector. Originating from a disillusioned group of Plague Marines, who adopted the worship of Chaos Undivided after discovering the flaws of their monotheistic belief. They are led by former Lord of Contagion and now Chaos Lord Kalpulax . Although they adopted worship of all four Chaos Gods, they kept a special fondness for Nurgle and his servants. While they march on into battle, they are often accompanied by lesser daemons of Nurgle. Since their incorporation into the warband, many heretic astartes already gifted by the grandfather joined their ranks.

Masters of the Daemonforge
Founded a few centuries after the end of the Horus Heresy, this group accumulates the most gifted smiths and daemonologists to construct a wide variety of daemon engines and even some of the more exotic weapons used by the Iconoclasts. They do not actually field any troops or armour, as they act as a twisted version of the loyalist's techmarines.

Assets

Due to the Iconoclasts diverse warhosts, they possess a wide variety of different types of troops, vehicles and daemon engines. Additionally to the listed permanent elements, hordes of cultists and other mortal fighters fight for the Iconoclasts as well as spontaneously summoned daemons.

History

The Iconoclasts originate from a warband sworn to destroy Erebus and Kor Phaeron as they perceived them as holding back their primarch from realising his true potential. During the Pilgrimage it became apparent that open animosity against Lorgar's most trusted companions was not advisable, so they decided to lay low and wait for the right time to strike. The eventual defeat of the traitors in the Siege of Terra disturbed their plans and led them to stray from their original goal.   Their last recorded sighting prior to the opening of the Cicatrix Maledictum was ten thousands of lightyears further to the galactic north, where they raided and defiled an Imperial Shrineworld. Being spat out by the roiling tides of the warp near Ultramar, they seized the opportunity and took revenge on their archenemies. However things took a turn to the worse when the Iconoclasts encountered a new kind of Space Marines loyal to the Corpse-Emperor, which cost them many wretched lives and ultimately resulted in them leaving the 500 Worlds.   Fate, finally, lead them to the Umbra-Sector. Upon their translation into the Arctur-System countless Hereteks on Arcturia revealed their true allegiance, longing for the approval of their dark gods. Instead, the Iconoclasts abused and exploited the heretical forges of Arcturia to refill their cargo holds and fuel supplies. Although they didn't see much value in the Dark Mechanicum adepts, they abducted them as slaves and seized as many Daemon Engines as possible, which were put to good use in their raids all over the system. After the System was set ablaze by the servants of Chaos and not much was left to easily pillage, they continued their wrathful journey through the sector. Many worlds were raided and many traitorous rebellions were stoked along their way.   Their advance was only stopped by the formidable orbital defenses of Zeon's World, which managed to disable the Iconoclasts Warp Engines, therefore binding them to this system. Left with no other choice they descended onto the planet and turned the local population against their former masters. Their planetfall started a war of attrition which would cost countless souls on all sides.
