City of Shenjin

The Forbidden City

The Great city of Shenjin is the Capital city of the kingdom of Nan-Tao. Very little is known of the city itself, as well as on its inhabitants. That is because all foreigner have been bared to travel to the city, hence its nickname of The Forbitten City. This is because the Kingdom of Nan-Tao is culturally very closed off to the outside world, and has been for as far back as history remembers.

Demographics

The number of inhabitant inside the walls is unknown, but it is estimated to be close to 3 million people. The vast majority of them can be assumed to be native Taonesse as immigrants, travelers and nomads aren't allowed inside the city and have never been.

Government

The city is directly run by the emperor, who is aided by multiple regional leader that represent each district of the city.

Defences

If the rare descriptions that Scholars possess are to be believed, The city is protected by 3 walls, each 20 metres high, with a moat dug from the western side of the the bend to the eastern one, transforming the city into a large artificial island. The imperial complex, including the famed Imperial palace are both protected by an additional wall surrounding them.

Infrastructure

It is said that Shenjin is the largest city in the world, with some people saying that Vrahlis, Palynor, and Kynrivel could all fit inside comfortably and have room left over.   The Grand Canal is a large but relatively shallow canal that links the Heinan and Libo rivers together, allowing for ships to pass from one river to the other. The Canal begins in just east of the city, with docks anchored to its side, allowing boats from as far south as Liuben Liuben to unload their goods and for merchants to sell them in the Shenjin's many markets.

Architecture

Overview

The city, viewed from above in one of its many towers, has been described as being a near endless sea of dark green wooden walls, rust coloured terracotta tiled roofs and colourful yellow and red flag banners attached to the sides of the towers, flying freely in the wind. All of those are criss-crossed by grey cobbled street that open up to small arboreal parks where one or two white birch trees will be planted, offering shade to passing commuters.

Buildings

Most houses and shops have a simple overhanging gable roof that is covered in terracotta tiles. Residential buildings generally have a veranda attached to their sides by which someone can access one of  the 3-5 appartements located inside. However, public buildings, such as temples, palaces and garden gates, the roof style is of the Hip and Gable style, with intricate carvings always present on the wooden beams supporting it. The roof of the large towers present all over the city are also of this style, though most are topped with double-gable roofs and have copper trimmings on their edges.

Geography

The city is built inside a large large bend of the Heinan river, the second largest river in Nan-Tao. Most description have the main walled city fill the entire bend of the river with numerous suburbs around the city and along the river. The larger region is a hilly plain situated just north-west of a large flood plain that is said to be able to turn into an inland sea if the seasonal flooding is severe enough. In the plains south-west of the city, the Libo river flows east, then due south all the way to Luiben.

Climate

The summer as said to be hot and humid while the winters are mild and cloudy. Most rain falls during summer, where violent storms coming from the west sweep over the city.
