The Divided Universe in Chimera | World Anvil

The Divided Universe

The universe is divided into several parts: the center, the inner, the outer, the far, and the veiled. Each of these areas helps to explain planar phenomenon visible or otherwise that influences existence as a whole.

The Center of the Universe

At the center is of existence is the plane of the physical and material, known as Ars Materia. The plane of existance holds like a shell over the physical world, whose lands are known as Airth. Countries under many names now unpronounceable have gathered up, settled upon, and fallen upon Airth. This is the world in which all humanoid life currently originates and thrives. From there, Ars Materia has two shadows.   One is a dark reflection, known as Pelagia, a place devoid of color. Pelagia is one of the "moons" sometimes visible on the surface of Ars Materia. Strangely, the moon takes on an almost organic appearance as it seems to unravel and outstretch into the void. However, Pelagia is only connected to Ars Materia through the dark reflection of night rain puddles and shadows that pool behind objects in it's--the Dread Moon's--light. The other shadow is only such by relation; it is a place of saturated color and wild, unfettered magics, known as Silverglass. This "moon" is fractured, with its main body mostly intact but thick shards broken and floating beside it. Silverglass is not like Pelagia in that it phases into and out of visibility. Silverglass persists even when out of view.

The Inner Shell

Ars Materia holds at the center of the world with it's "moons"--other planes, visible in it's night sky. Two suns revolve around the Airth: Solah and Frith. These too are thought to be planes, though no way has yet been divined how to arrive at their surface as they are fiery orbs that give light, warmth, and thusly life to Ars Materia; no inside is thought to be possible to exist.   From here, there are several "stars", or holes in the shell that surrounds the inner planes. These stars exists not just for Ars Materia, but can be seen on the face of Pelagia and Silverglass as well. These "stars" are holes into the outer planes and are thought to be the only reason why planar travel is possible to the Outer Realms.
Recorded texts that speak of stars forming in the sky after the deeds of dead heroes make one thing clear: stars are connections to time and space. Perhaps by venturing into the

The Lodestar

There exists only one anomaly among stars--the Lodestar, forever pointing north for all hemispheres. None have yet deciphered the meaning and visibility of the lodestar, but most navigators have been grateful for the red star.

The Outer Realms

Outside the shell is primordial chaos. Much like some fruit have a core, the outer fruit would be the primordial chaos, with the Inner Shell being its core, completely sealed inside. In this primordial chaos, aptly referred to as Primordia, the elements here battle for supremacy and against their own entropy bordering the Far Void.

Middling Planes

Between Primordia and the Far Void, however, are middle realms--some of divine origin, good or bad, that have wormed their way through the chaos and created other planes within them. These pathways the divine planes have carved are called passages, and most can be traced directly to one of the many stars visible from Ars Materia.   Many of these divine planes exist in order to influence and replace Ars Materia, in hopes of becoming the centermost plane of existence, bending the laws of reality to its whims. Others seek to simply make a reality in its image.

The Far Void

Beyond all of the realms, the primordial chaos and the divines, laps the endless shores of Elsewhere. Its tidal pull licks at the edges of both Primordia and the middling planes. Were it not that these planes were self-sustaining, they would be pulled into the entropy of an unfeeling and ravenous universe and be devoured, leaving no trace.

The Veiled Worlds

Of the many world that exist, none are so fantastical and dangerous as the veiled realms, as they connect all of existence regardless of their metaphysical or planar connection to one another.

The Ether

The Mechanical Realm of the Dead, it is a regimented world of gear, gems, and stone that ticks ever onward. It pushes spend lives and memories further through the plane without stop. It is thought that all of time is recorded here, and that all divine planes, including Primordia, have at least some ties to the Ether, as all knowledge and all of the dead pass through here.   To note, each divine has its own afterlife connected to the Ether such as the below listed:

The Combs

In between the folds of the Ether where the gears do not grind dwell the resting dead. Whether imprisoned or merely housed, the spirits of these dead are chained and bound to their new domiciles, a single hole in the towering combs of the afterlife.

The Wall of the Faceless Dead

Stretching across all time, the wall of the faceless dead is as much of an entity as it is an object. It grows with each edition of a faceless dead--one who lived their lives without convictions or strong beliefs, and merely drifted through life. Now, they twist and glue to the wall--to those most like them. Were it not for this disposition, the wall of the faceless dead could disperse would they simply grow their own convictions instead of relying on the world to give it to them.

The Stream

The Astral Plane, known to academics as The Stream, is the ever expanding plane of dreams. It is also a space shared by all dreamers, who create their own dimensions simply by sleeping. Here, all dreams are hosted and collected, all memory and feeling is passed on, and all are connected. It is thought that this ever-expanding plane is what gives the planes its magic, which is then influenced by the planar lenses (each individual plane) is is pulled through or manifested from.
