Chimeras
Regarded with almost legendary status among Earth's population, the Chimeras are the most well trained and one of the best equipped fighting forces on the planet. Many of their numbers are veterans of the Sirasion invasion and even more equipped with various cybernetic enhancements that set them leagues above the average human. With their unique arsenal and far spreading reach, the Chimeras are universally known as a force you don't want to be on the wrong side of.
Structure
The Chimeras follow a somewhat different military ranking system, as they tend to operate in small numbers each Chimera, regardless of rank must be capable of taking control of a situation if there is no leader present. Even the administration staff are fully combat trained to a high degree should there come a time where its necessary for them to fight.
Base Staff - The administration staff of the Chimeras are the intelligence backbone of the force, they oversee operations from satalite uplinks and are wholly responsible for the deployment and exfiltration of troops and supplies relevant to Chimera ops. Typically the admin staff are recruited from operators who choose to or are unable to fight in the field anymore. Otherwise they will be hand picked from the British military or other military allies. Recruits will not actually know who they are working for until they are accepted into the role. After being accepted they will leave their old lives behind to live and work within Chimera base. They are allowed communication with the outside, but conversations are heavily monitored to ensure no leakage of sensitive information. There have been cases of some base staff showing a desire to progress to more practical field roles, if they chose to do so they are put through the same training as potential Chimera operators.
Operative - The operative is the primary field role. the rank in and of itself has some progression, such as operative corporal to operative sergeant all the way to squad captain. A Chimera operative is put through vigorous training which many do not pass. Like any role within the Chimeras, they do not know who they are training for until they succeed. If they fail they remain unaware. The training process takes a year to complete with about a 10% pass rate, all potential recruits having to be approved by the squad captain they will be issued to.
Squad Captain - The highest field rank in the Chimeras is that of squad captain. A captain leads a close knit squad consisting of 10 to 50 men, each one being personally approved by the captain. Each squad is designated as a letter, Archer's Alpha Squad being an example.
Culture
In the Chimeras it is considered that you will be dedicating your life to the cause and that you may potentially go a number of years without speaking to friends or family. As such, to preserve ones identity they often adopt specific call signs and live by these names on and off the field.
Cybernetics, while at first were an undesired trait, are now considered normal within the ranks of the Chimeras. many operatives opting to be willingly cybernetically enhanced for the purpose of their work. When a soldier chooses or is offered the chance of a cybernetic upgrade the old limb is removed and put in cryo stasis where it is preserved in case it ever needs to be re-attached.
Assets
The Chimeras have access to a high amount of funding direct from the Earth Government , This is mostly disguised as counter measures against extra terrestrial threats while nearly all this funding goes to the Chimeras and upkeep of their equipment. The arsenal of the Chimeras is extensive, having their own plethora of unique firearms derived from stolen and adapted Sirasion designs. While forces like the EDF are more explorative with laser and plasma weaponry, the Chimeras have pushed ballistic technology as far as it will go, with weapons capable of destroying vehicles in a single hit, portable miniguns and caseless assault rifles.
The Chimeras have a host of unique vehicles, from troop transport to highly advanced jet fighters and attack helicopters. They also have a stake in an operate off an aircraft carrier as well as having their own destroyer, the CNV Dauntless.
History
The Chimeras were founded initially during the Sirasion invasion. They were essentially the first resistance group against the Sirasion invaders, fighting in hit and run style attacks using stolen weaponry and assets. With their numbers consisting of mostly cyborgs created during the Russian Cybernetic Experiments they were naturally better equipped to fight an enemy with technology miles ahead of humanities own. At this time they were simply known as a UK branch of the Earth resistance, they hid out in sewers and underground tunnels in central UK making attacks on the Sirasions where ever they could.
Eventually word got out of their resistance movement and more individuals were attracted to their cause. All manner of people from civilians to former soldiers who's militaries had been utterly wiped out. The organization of the forces was ragtag at best, with leadership being a constant struggle within it. Many vied for leadership but they soon would be succeeded by someone else trying to achieve the same thing. For the duration of the Sirasion invasion where was no specific 'leader' as such, but individuals who were willing to take charge over small groups. Archer was one of these individuals, taking command of what would be known as Alpha squad. Each squad was mostly independent of one another, sharing not much bar a living space which was safe from detection by the Sirasions.
Toward the end of the invasion, Archer and his small squad of cyborgs accomplished much. They had become masters of their new bodies and stolen Sirasion weapons and were making strong headway against them. Despite the fact Archer and many of his comrades were in their mid to late teens had nothing to do with their fighting capabilities, they were successful in routing the Sirasions from a farm they were occupying dangerously close to Chimera base, a target that had been an ever present danger. As the organization grew and the Sirasions were sent on the run as their galactic campaign began to fall apart, the Earth resistance was now a fully functional fighting force, remaining military assets were pooled into it eventually what was once a ragtag group of guerrilla fighters to a fully realised fighting force. The subject of a name was thrown around for a while, but it was Archer who mentioned in one of his battle plans how two squads under his command were to act as if they were a multi headed beast in the formation of their movements. Someone mentioned the mythical Chimera and the name stuck.
The end stages of the fight back against the Sirasions was no less dangerous, if anything fighting it was higher risk with the Sirasions holding the defenders advantage. During this time the squad leaders of nearly all the other units within the newly formed Chimeras had been lost or killed in action. Archer at this point was the longest standing squad leader and was there for expected to take control, which he did, not reluctantly, but not willingly either.
Under Archer's command the Chimeras brutally wiped out the remaining Sirasions. By now there was an entire chain of command and other worldwide resistance groups joined the Chimera ranks and dispatch all remaining Sirasion forces. Over the course of the invasion however there was more than just the Sirasions to worry about. The Vampyrim had arrived and brought a deadly virus with them. the Chimera played an important role in fighting back against them as well, while scientists working as part of the Chimeras managed to engineer a cure for the Virus.
The final move for the Sirasions was to use an experimental weapon to completely annihilate Earth from orbit. in a do or die move, Grizzly, one of the founding members of the Chimeras and leader of the ARK program, flew the experimental ship known as the ARK into the mouth of the Sirasion weapon just as it was about to fire. the resulting cataclysmic force opened a wormhole and sent Grizzly, his ship and much of the Sirasion weapon straight to the Andromeda galaxy. Naturally Earth's population thought him to be dead.
After the war, the Chimeras had become a household name. They worked closely with re-establishing governments as sovereign borders were reformed. This put them firmly in the public spotlight. While the Chimeras were not necessarily world leaders, they had a significant pull in what many countries did. Because of this the Chimeras needed a political representative. There were a few forgettable names, but none were more suited to the role than Grizzly himself. During the war he had acted as the political face of the Chimeras when reaching out to other resistance groups. He survived his trip to Andromeda and made it back several years later, however he was forced to abandon his body and transfer his consciousness into a highly advanced AI. Upon constructing himself a new, realistic android body, the fact he was effectively a highly advanced android was kept from the public as he resumed his political position.
Territories
The Chimeras occupy a multi mile patch of land within the central United Kingdom, the whole area being completely off limits to the public. Several villages encompass the zone, these were abandoned during the Sirasion invasion and have since been used as accommodation for Chimera personnel. These villages are self sufficient communities with shops and bars for personnel to use.
The area is also home to a military airbase used by the RAF, however it does play host to most of the Chimera's jet fighter aircraft.
Mess with the best, die like the rest.
2012 - 2020 - unofficially the Chimeras are still operational.
