Tiefling (TEEF-ling)
Given the nature of Shamsari society, the deep fear and revulsion most people feel about the baleful influence of demons and all things infernal, it is perhaps unsurprising that Tieflings are looked upon with such distrust by virtually all other peoples. These insular and itinerant people are found all throughout the Dar-al-Shams, and yet are kept at an arm's length by most every community they encounter. Although they are officially regarded as a tolerated group within the Caliphate, bare toleration is typically the absolute extent of the matter, with Tieflings generally being viewed as permanent aliens to wider Shamsari society. Intermarriage with other groups is extremely uncommon, both because of the insular traditions of the Tieflings as a people and because of the prejudice felt towards them by the other peoples of the Caliphate. But beyond ostracization, Tieflings are also often subjected to mob violence, as they tend to be blamed whenver anything goes wrong, whether they had anything to do with it or not. To be a Tiefling in the Dar-al-Shams is a difficult life indeed.
In part because of this rampant prejudice, very little is known about the history of the Tieflings as a people, only that they arrived in the Caliphate from somewhere to the east around the year 300 AE. Although their obviously infernal appearance initially alarmed the Shamsar, interrogations by religious authorities determined conclusively that they did not worship demons, instead mainly worshiping various Dragon deities (possibly due to having lived for some time in the Dragon Lands). Thus, they were extended the status of People of the Light and allowed to take up residence in the Caliphate. In the intervening centuries most Tieflings residing in the Dar-al-Shams have converted to Shamsari, though some still practice their old Draconic rites, or have converted to Helionism or Hebronism. Amongst themselves they speak a unique dialect of Draconic not spoken anywhere else in the known world, though they all also speak Low Solar.
Though many Tieflings have settled down and practice all sorts of professions. They are, as a culture, itinerant, moving from settlement to settlement performing jobs that are not in sufficient demand to support permanent resident craftspeople. As such, they tend to be very skilled Artificers, with Tiefling smiths, tailors, and cobblers being particularly well renowned. Due to the suspicion and hostility they are subject to by the rest of society, Tiefling communities are used to defending themselves and living on the fringes, meaning Fighters and Rangers are very common. Though Tieflings are rarely accepted into Wizard schools, and Warlocks are forbidden by law, Tielfings tend to produce more Sorcerers than most other peoples. It is unclear why this is, precisely. Those who view the Tieflings with suspicion claim it is because they are secret diabolists, but others have posited that it is their extra-planar ancestry manifesting itself. The Tieflings also have a rich culture and particularly love music, so Bards are very common among them. Finally, they produce many notable Rogues, as living on the margins sometimes means going outside of the law in order to survive.
