The Gnoll

"They're not part-dog people. Unless they are. Hyenas are confusing, but gnolls are a blast.

Gnoll Mindset

You Might...

  • Be physically demonstrative—hugging, punching, sniffing, or licking your friends. Sometimes, one of those after another.
  • Keep a bone or piece from one of your favorite relatives, as a reminder of them and/or as a casting focus.
  • Go out of your way to define yourself apart from your family, friends, or community, while still using what you were/are to go further.

Others Probably...

  • Are intimidated by your size, teeth, and eerie laugh.
  • Respect the brutal efficiency with your various professions, be it hunting, combat, or magic.
  • Define you by your scent before anything, be it something sweet and sickly, or harsh and vibrant.

Description

Physical Description

Kholos are hyena-like humanoids with short muzzles, sharp teeth, and large and expressive round ears. Their bodies are covered in shaggy fur, rougher on the back and softer and lighter on the stomach and throat, usually in an off-white, tan, or brown shade; spots and stripes are both common. Kholos typically stand between 6 and 7 feet tall. Women are usually about a head taller than men and correspondingly stronger. Kholos are considered adults at 15 and live about 60 years on average.

Anything Special?

Hyenas, which gnolls are based off of, are not canine in nature. Not gonna stop me from canine coding them. Pupper is Pupper.

Ancestry Talents

Gnoll Origin

All Gnolls have a sort of pack mentality, such camaraderie protecting them, and you, from harm.

As long as you can See⚙️ one person you consider your ally or a member of your family (such as a twin), you can use this talent as a Free Action | ◇. When either of you roll a Critical Failure on a roll that uses a 1d20 , by using this talent you or the other person (whomever didn't make the failed roll) may roll a d20 themselves. The new roll must be used.

Additionally, you become trained in a Weapon Group of your choice. If you become trained in at least 10 or all Weapon Groups (such as becoming a Fighter), you gain a free General Talent you are eligible for.

This Talent cannot be swapped.

Gnoll Bite

Your gnoll jaws and teeth are naturally quite strong, to the point that you can crush bones with ease.

You have the Gnoll Bonecrunchers Natural Weapon. They are melee weapons that deal Piercingrcing damage equal to 1d6 + your Half-Proficiency and are part of the Unarmed Weapon Group. They have the Agile ⚙️, Finesse ⚙️, and Heavy⚙️ traits.

Names

Gnoll names vary from plane to plane, but they are all bombastic and declarative of what the Gnoll believes in.

Animundi

Animundi Gnoll names depend on their personality. They are more like nicknames and are treated as such; often being verbs, adverbs, or full titles. For other cultures on the plane, a Gnoll's birth name and their established name remains consistent, being a merged form of the verbage used in their given names (ex. Heart-is-True vs Harastru. Flourish and Floris. Gnawbone and Gnabon, etc). Sometimes the names will be different entirely, leading to True Naming a Gnoll being difficult for the flexible Ancestry.

Golarion

Newborn kholo are given a Root name, much like a True Name, typically that of a bone, plant, or animal (though never Hyena, as this is considered narcissistic and arrogant). As a gnoll reaches certain milestones in life, they add descriptors to their name. Root names are often passed down through families, while descriptors are chosen to fit the gnoll's personality, usually in raucous ceremonies.
