The Rhino Rebellion

Eighty years prior to the start of Chasing Tail began the Rhino Rebellion. Rhinos, suffering from high infant mortality rates and fearing the extinction of their race, started making demands of the Royal Court in Furope. They wanted funding to find a solution to their condition. Whilst the government was happy to meet this demand at first, the situation only grew more precarious. Many Rhinos formed militant groups, with the most notable being the Ruffskins. More than a simple gang, the Ruffskins were a violent movement that made several demands of the government, including additional rights not given to other species and an increase to the medical funding they were already receiving. They organized protests across various cities, notably Skalan. Whilst peaceful at first, radicals among the Ruffskins hijacked these movements and started inciting violence across cities. This led to various violent clashes, which saw incredibly high casualty rates.   Scientists managed to discover a breakthrough, sequencing an aerosol that when dispersed, would increase healthy birth rates across all female rhinos. Yet when this was brought before King Arkus, he demanded a different aerosol be released. One that would massively increase infertility rates. When the Royal Scientist refused, he was imprisoned for treason. His successor followed the king’s orders and had the aerosol dispersed soon after.   The Ruffskin movement died down soon after, believing their demands had been met. Soon, however, it became all too apparent the aerosol had the opposite effect. Coupled with the number of deaths the rhinos sustained during the rebellion and soon, their race teetered on the edge of extinction. Whilst various non-profit organizations backed by wealthy philanthropists were able to eventually undo the virus unleashed by the king, by that point the damage had been done.   By present-day, over 90% of the rhino population has been wiped out.
