Nadyra, The God of Death (He/Him)

The God of Death is a quiet, reclusive young Divine that is seldom seen or heard from. Having ascended as a direct result of the Cataclysm, and having been without his soul already for some time prior to his death, he is even-tempered except under the most dire circumstances.
"I don't know if I worship a dead man or not, but if I saw him again, I'd buy the blue bastard a drink. Gods know he needs it, more so if he ain't dead yet."
— An elven veteran, recalling fighting alongside the God of Death during The Cataclysm

History

Ascension

After the One in White ascended to power and took his place as the Divine Dictator, Nadyra Yvrey gave his life defending the few survivors fleeing Chardovil West. As a result of his sacrifice, even without any emotional attachment to the survivors, the Universe offered Nadyra the choice to become not only a God, but a Godslayer.

With the power to slay the God of Fire that was the primary source of destruction, Nadyra quickly eliminated the threat and called down a healing rain to snuff the last of the flames and accelerate the land's recovery. However, he drew the eye of the One in White, who successfully defeated the new God.

Exile

Unwilling to see its champion fall to the usurper, the Universe wreathed the wounded God in its magic, protecting him from truly being slain by any Celestial being. The One in White, no longer able to truly eliminate his only true rival, cast Nadyra's divine soul back into his former, deceased body. The God of Death found himself trapped in his flesh body, rendered powerless and dormant as he awaited his chance to return to the battlefield.

Prayer + Worship

Worshipers

Nadyra, after his fall to the One in White, faded into obscurity and legend-- a tale told only by the few survivors remaining from the Astral War in which they fought alongside him. They understand that they may pray to a dead man, and, should their voices grow too loud, the One in White may take issue with their continued devotion.

Every known survivor of The Cataclysm and first wave of the Astral War has elected to take the risk regardless.
An aging dwarf takes a seat, alone, at a weatherworn bar in rural Altraxia, ordering two ales. The bartender knowingly places one in front of the dwarf, and another directly across from him, leaving the man to his thoughts. He raises his drink to the unmoving tankard before taking a long drink and looking out the window at the gentle, soothing rain beginning to fall.

"Cheers, old friend. Maybe some day I'll finally get to buy you that drink I owe you."

Iconography

Because of the secretive nature of their worship, Nadyra's worshipers have developed their own sigils and icons to represent their forbidden faith. Often, they will use these icons as means of signaling to each other, and have taken great pains to ensure the Order of White does not hear of their faith.

Crescent Star

The most common symbol used for Nadyra is the Crescent Star - an eight-pointed star tucked within a nearly-complete crescent moon.
This icon depicts the Universe (the Crescent) shielding the God of Death (the Star) from harm, and is typically used among those who still believe the God of Death is alive, merely dormant or waiting for the opportunity to strike back against the One in White and liberate the Gods.

Crossed Sabers

A more subtle icon Nadyra's worshipers will use is a pair of crossed sabers, for the fallen God's weapon of choice: a pair of scimitars.
The faithful will typically keep a pair of crossed scimitars above the mantle in their home, or near a shrine. Those believing the God was truly slain will wrap the blades in ice-blue or midnight-blue fabric in memoriam, for his pale skin and the dark feathers on his wings.

Other Symbols

  • Black Diamonds are offered as offerings to the God, for those who have the means to acquire one. The God of Death wore a silver pendant with a black diamond, as a nod to the jewel set into the collar of his armor in life, which also served as a spellcasting focus.
  • Silver Bracelets are worn by those who served directly alongside Nadyra in the first Astral War, as the God of Death wore a pair of pure silver cuffs around his wrists. No one knows why he always wore the cuffs, but only those who served alongside him have taken to wearing them in solidarity.
  • Divine Status

Nadyra is one of the few Chardovilian Divine who plays multiple roles during his brief tenure as the God of Death and Rebirth, and the Guardian of the Veil.

    God of Death

Best known for his role as the God of Death, Nadyra took his position as Godslayer very seriously, as he is only known to have slain Kossuth with his own hand. His critics speculate that he likely had a hand in the death of Driama as well, though there is no evidence of such.

Nadyra also watched over the Astral Plane and the Glemsi, and the presence of his mortal Glemsi has resulted in a unique relationship with the God of Death and the Glemsi.

    God of Rebirth

While Nadyra is most commonly known as the God of Death, he would correct the record wherever possible that he is not the god of any domain, strictly speaking. However, many mortals originally insisted he must have a domain if he were a God and Godslayer, so he opted for "God of Death and Rebirth".

Nadyra's powers were not strictly destructive in nature. He also possessed an array of abilities that could heal and rejuvenate, which he used to heal the scarred, ashen remnants of Chardovil West after The Cataclysm. Summoning a healing rain after Kossuth's demise, Nadyra made the land habitable again so those who wanted to remain and rebuild had the ability to.

    Guardian of the Veil

Nadyra's proper title and role among the Divine pantheon was as the Guardian of the Veil. The title refers to the Veil that divides Chardovil, the Material Plane, and Astral Plane, as well as interplanar travel.

This role gave him near-omniscient sight over interplanar travelers, ensuring both that the Divine do not overstep their roles once again, and that the dangers of Chardovil remains safely nested away from the Material Plane.
    Divine Champion
While less of a role and more of a title, Nadyra was designated the Divine Champion prior to his defeat by the One in White. This rank among the Divine designated him the protector of mortals from the Divine abuse of power, and protected him from being slain by a Godslayer without the consent of the same mortals he protects.

"Do you realize how weird it is to have your Voidwalker be a literal God? I don't know what he wants, much less his 'will', whatever the hell that means."
    — Nadyra's Glemsi
"You've lived an unfortunately short life, mortal, and yet you've done more good with it than any other mortal I've seen. How would you like to save the world before you must leave it? Perhaps, this way, I can save you from It."

    Unintended Implications
Nadyra's insistence on being a God of Rebirth as well as death has led to speculation that he may be a Godmaker, as well as a Godslayer.

Hi there! You may not know me, but I am the sponsor of the Great Leader of Their People Summer Camp Prompt this year! Since you wrote this article, I would like to know, would you mind me reading it aloud on my Twitch channel this week? I have a lot to get through so it helps to do it live while people watch. I've scheduled to go live at 8am and 8pm Eastern Time every weekday. If you join and comment, I can go over your article right then and there! If you'd like to coordinate a specific date, let me know. If you aren't able to make it (or don't want to be present live), you can also always watch streams after the fact on my YouTube channel   BUT, if the answer is NO because you'd rather I not, it's okay! Not agreeing to be streamed definitely does not put you at any disadvantage for winning in my eyes. Please respond swiftly by replying here (make sure to click REPLY under my comment or I won't be notified), message me on my World Anvil profile page, Discord, or anywhere else you find me online.   Thanks again! Whatever you choose, God bless and much success! <3

Hi! Thank you so much for reaching out - I don't mind you reading my article on your Twitch stream at all! I'm in Mountain Time so I can't tune into the early streams, but an evening stream should work fine, since I'm free most evenings and could tune in! My Twitch is alevicsca (also linked in all my socials) too, and I tend to be active in chat, so I'll definitely pop in to say hi next time I get the chance, and thank you!
