Nadar Character in Characters and their Adventures | World Anvil

Nadar

Nadar (a.k.a. Dragon (because of his mask and hands), Priest, Traveler)

Warning, this article contains descriptions of torture, gore, and abuse.

The Unwanted

Nadar comes from the orc tribe that lives in the Grey Steppe. This orc tribe claimed the right to the steppe. Their skins, houses, and even mounts they rode were as grey as the land around them.
Nadar's father was a great human warrior, who befriended the tribe and proven his strength in combat, which captured the heart of one of the orc girls. She was Nadar's mother.
But Nadar's father didn't live much longer. He died one day at the battlefield, and the rumors saying that maybe he wasn't really that strong began to circulate. That maybe he cheated and was a plain liar. The rumors have broken Nadar's mother.
According to the tradition she had to find another husband or she would be thrown out of the tribe.
Her new husband was a cruel man that claimed her when she was still grieving. She had four orcish kids with him.
As all of them were stronger than Nadar, they were treated better by the tribe, and the rumors about his father lead to the whole tribe treating Nadar like trash.   Nadar's mother has fallen sick because of the grief and soon has passed away.
Nadar's step-father, not wanting to deal with the little mongrel, sold the Nadar as a slave.

The Enslaved

Young Nadar was chained and taken away by the slavers to the slave market.
There he was measured and weighted. People checked every nook and cranny of his body.
While standing on the stage, waiting to be put up for auction, he noticed a neatly clothed girl with scarlet hair who could be his age (Redhead), and she noticed him.
She told something to her father while pointing at him and smiling.
When the auction time came, he outbid everyone else. The little girl started laughing and jumping from excitement.   Nadar has been taken to the enormous mansion with an equally enormous backyard and forest on its territory.
He was washed, scraped and clothed. Then he was brought to the red-headed girl's room.
"I chose to save you and my daddy bought you for me.
That means you are my property now.
But don't worry, we will play and we will have fun.
Now come, here, near the fireplace, I want to show you something."
Nadar stepped towards her, and when he stood near the fireplace, in the blink of an eye, she pulled the poker out of the fire and stabbed Nadar in the foot with it.
The boy screamed from the pain and all of his head filled with white, but instinctively he tried to grab her neck to strangle her. But as his hands moved towards her, they stopped on something invisible.
The girl started to laugh.
"We are going to have so much fun together!"
The next years of his life were filled with pain, torture, and humiliation.
Even the hope that one of the torture sessions would kill him was crushed when the redhead girl discovered that she is a magic user talented in the ways of healing.
She started experimenting on him with different kinds of magic.
She cast a spell on him that would make him forget her name and face, so he would be terrified of anyone he would meet. Later, he only remembered the color of her hair.
She let him run away and sent the hounds and huntsmen after him.   The staff of the house cared for him. They bandaged his wounds and cleaned his face of the blood. Before he had a mask, they fed him regularly, it was harder later. As long as he was alive young miss didn't torture anyone but her plaything.   And then one of the maids decided to save him.
During one of the hunts, she has found a way to confuse the hounds.
Nadar was free.

The Found

Nadar ran. Days passed and he still ran. He just wanted to die, but he was scared that if he will stop even for a second Redhead would find him.
For him, the years have passed while running, when he finally collapsed.
He lost his consciousness at the feet of the shrine of the God of Travel, where one of his priests was just taking a rest.
He took care of Nadar and started to teach him about the world and dogmas of his faith. He gave Nadar his name. The boy has fallen in love with the teachings of a deity who was all about the freedom and going wherever one wants.
He started traveling with the old man. But at some point, the priest told Nadar he doesn't have anything more to teach him.
They have met another priest of the God of Travel and he became a new teacher for the boy. This process repeated and thanks to it, Nadar visited wonderful places.   When he was twenty, he became a new priest of the God of Travel. He started his own pilgrimage to wherever his feet lead him.

Physical Description

Apparel & Accessories

He wears a scarf that hides anything below his cheekbones and priest robes. His hands are covered either with bandages or gloves.
Whenever he knows the battle is coming, he will paint the parts of his body that stick out of them and his face with black paint that will make him look more like a dragon. He uses a club and shield as his weapons.

Mental characteristics

Sexuality

Straight. Due to abuse, will avoid any type of closeness with others.

Social

Contacts & Relations

He tries not to attract any attention to himself as to not be found by the Redhead. As such he keeps his contact with the people to minimum, even when he helps them.

Scars and wounds

Read this part only if descriptions of wounds and torture methods don't bother you.
Almost all of Nadar's body is covered with various cuts, burns (both normal, magical, and chemical), rope marks, bites and holes caused by him being locked in an iron maiden. Some of the limbs, however, sustained more specific damage, described below.

Face

Thanks to the efforts of his masters, Nadar's face, nose and hair are completely healed above the level of his cheekbones.
One of his ears is missing a part, with scars suggesting that it was regrown and destroyed over and over, either by being cut or torn.
There are circular holes in his cheeks through which his teeth can be seen. They were made using heated nails that were pierced through them.
There are also smaller, longer scars all around his mouth suggesting that the knife was used on it more than once.   More than once Redhead hung him by his neck, almost suffocating him.
Whenever she was bored with his screams (when he still screamed), she cut out his vocal cords. But the silence also bored her, so she healed him again and again.   Only once, by mistake, she paralyzed him from the neck below.

Arms

Almost every area of his forearms is covered with cuts that Redhead used to drain him of his blood, only to keep him stabilized at the edge of life and death.
There are seems that at some point held together parts of his hands that were cut off.
The joints at his fingers seem to be thicker than they should be.
Even though his fingernails regrew, they seem to look a little weird, with some forming into sharp claws.   Both forearms and hands grow out scales instead of hair due to experiments related to transformation magic. Nadar's right hand seems to be a little dried up after it was hit with a necrotic spell.

Torso

The most noticeable scar is the long, sewn cut between solar plexus and lower abdomen made when Redhead cut Nadar apart and left him with his wound open for a week. To this day there are marks of hooks that held both halves open.
A second most noticeable scar there is a pattern looking like a tree caused by electric spells.
On the right shoulder blade, there is a "crater" from when he had it broken by force spell.
His whole back is covered with small circular burns caused by heated up needles.
Priestess that was very proficient with medicine and healing magic managed to take out all of the 34 nails from his peritoneum and some other body parts.

Legs

More than once, his legs were completely shattered and his tendons were cut, leaving them with various irregularities (they don't hinder his movement as that wouldn't be fun for Redhead when the dogs chased him).
Once, Nadar was hung upside down when a hook was pierced through both of his ankles.

General body shape and features

He is very tall but very slim. Because of that, his muscular arms and legs look as if they were too long (one could describe his body shape as the one of a basketball player).
He is seasoned in battle.   When he was young, his skin was grey like that of his tribesmen.
But with passing years and tanning in the sun it changed its color to green.
Some of the Redhead's experiments changed the skin on his arms so it grows scales.
Due to the same experiments, there are three little bone spikes growing out of each of his eyebrows.

Possible Variant: Mask of the Metal-eater

While searching for the new ways to torture Nadar, Redhead acquired a cursed item - a metal half mask that replaced his own jaw.
The mask, when worn, is impossible to remove and makes it impossible for the wearer to eat normal food.
Instead, it will open only if any kind of metal is placed next to it, making a horrible scraping sound.
Thanks to the spell that enchants it, it will convert the metals into any nutrients required for the body to survive, however, this action causes pain to the wearer.

Trauma

To this day he fears any woman with the red hair. In their presence, he either completely freezes or cowers, unable to make any move.
After years of torture, any touch causes his various reactions, from recoiling to panicking or even reacting aggressively.
When he goes to sleep, mostly nightmares await him.
He hides his scars and tries to change and wash in places where no one could see him, ashamed of how he looks now.

Prayers

As he was taught by various masters, Nadar discovered that some of the prayers they taught him could influence the world around him.
He especially loves prayers related to nature and those that heal and take away the pain others can feel.

Religious views

He loves the teachings of the God of Travel.
He loves that his deity wants him to be free, to feel the wind in his hair, to see the sights both amazing and terrifying, to experience the life.
He loves that he can give the blessing of his god to the fellow travelers with his prayers and defend them using his orcish strength.
Those are the things that let him forget about his nightmares.
