Veil of the Forgotten

Veil of the Forgotten
3rd-level illusion
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 30 feet
Components: V, S, M (a piece of gossamer and a drop of lemon juice)
Duration: 1 hour

Veil of the Forgotten is an illusion spell that enshrouds the target in a mystical fog, rendering them unnoticed or easily overlooked by those around them. This spell is not simply a visual obscuration; it is an intricate weaving of forgetfulness and unobtrusiveness, a manipulation of perception that causes the target to fade from awareness and memory.

Upon casting, the gossamer and lemon juice intermingle in the caster's hands, emitting a faint, ethereal glow. The air around the chosen target shimmers as they become enveloped in a soft, almost imperceptible mist. This veil distorts the light slightly, but its true power lies in its effect on the minds of those who behold the ensorcelled individual.

Mantle of Obscurity: The target becomes exceptionally easy to overlook and forget. While they remain visible, observers find their attention sliding off the target, as if their presence is inconsequential or too mundane to note.

Mechanic: The target gains advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks and can attempt to hide even when only lightly obscured. Observers must make a Wisdom saving throw to notice or remember the presence of the target. On a failed save, the target is effectively invisible to them, their presence slipping from the observer’s mind as soon as they look away.

Subtle Evasion: The spell is particularly useful in situations that require subtlety over outright invisibility. It allows the target to move through crowds, slip past guards, or engage in espionage without drawing attention, their presence registering as nothing more than a fleeting shadow in the corner of one's eye.

At Higher Levels: When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, the duration increases by 30 minutes, and the spell can affect one additional target for each slot level above 3rd, provided the targets are within 30 feet of each other when the spell is cast.

Veil of the Forgotten is more than just a spell; it is a subtle dance with the mind’s tendency to overlook the ordinary, a mastery of the art of being unseen without being invisible. The spell symbolizes the quiet power of the unnoticed, the strength found in subtlety and the shadows. It offers a unique approach to stealth and subterfuge, providing a magical means to move unnoticed, not by hiding the target, but by making them unremarkable and easily dismissed from memory.
