Starfire's Beckoning Spell in Changing Stars | World Anvil

Starfire's Beckoning

Starfire's Beckoning
2nd-level evocation, cosmic
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 60 feet
Components: V, S, M (a piece of meteorite and a candle wick burned by starlight)
Duration: 1 minute

Upon casting Starfire's Beckoning, you summon the enigmatic and ancient energies of distant stars, channeling a fragment of the cosmic inferno into the mortal realm. The spell invokes a shimmering, ephemeral flame, akin to the fleeting light of a shooting star, which you can direct at a point within range. The starfire, radiant and otherworldly, illuminates not just the physical space, but also the hidden truths that dwell in shadows and secrets.

When you cast the spell, choose a point you can see within range. The starfire ignites at that point, creating a luminous, star-like glow in a 20-foot radius and dim light for an additional 20 feet. This light is magical and reveals things as they truly are. It dispels illusions and reveals creatures and objects hidden by magic, including those invisible or transformed by enchantments. Any creature or object concealed by such means becomes outlined in a gentle, starlit glow while within the light's radius.

In addition to its revealing properties, the starfire exerts a subtle gravitational pull, akin to the celestial bodies that inspired it. Small, unattended objects within the light’s radius may begin to drift slowly towards the flame's epicenter, as if caught in a gentle cosmic tide. This effect is more poetic than practical, seldom exerting enough force to be of tactical use, but it adds an otherworldly ambiance to the spell’s presence.

Moreover, the light of the starfire can be seen as a beacon of hope or a harbinger of fate. Creatures within its radius might feel an inexplicable sense of awe or foreboding, a cosmic whisper that speaks to the soul. While this effect does not have a mechanical impact, it can significantly influence the mood and role-playing aspects of an encounter.

Finally, as the caster, you can use a bonus action on your turn to move the starfire up to 30 feet to a new point within range. The movement of the flame mimics the serene, inevitable glide of celestial bodies across the night sky.

At Higher Levels: When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the radius of the light increases by 10 feet, and the range of its truth-revealing properties extends by 5 feet for each slot level above 2nd.
