Crimson Bind Spell in Changing Stars | World Anvil

Crimson Bind

Crimson Bind
1st-level conjuration
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 30 feet
Components: V, S, M (a drop of the caster's blood and a broken chain link)
Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute

Crimson Bind is not merely a spell; it is a manifestation of the caster's will, a tangible extension of their innermost essence. When this incantation is spoken, reality itself seems to bleed, as ethereal chains, resembling rivulets of crimson light, emerge from the ground. These spectral shackles are imbued with an aura of ancient power, resonating with the echoes of forgotten souls and the whispers of a bygone era.
Upon casting Crimson Bind, you target a creature within range. The ground beneath the target erupts, as spectral chains, glistening with an eerie, blood-red hue, snake upwards, seeking to bind the limbs of the chosen foe. The chains, while intangible, feel oppressively heavy to the one they encircle, binding not just the body but also ensnaring the spirit.
The target must succeed on a Strength saving throw or be restrained for the duration. Restrained by these chains, the target's movements become sluggish, their actions fettered by the weight of the ethereal bonds. The chains constrict tighter with every attempt to break free, pulsing with a sinister energy that saps the strength of the ensnared.
Each turn, the bound creature can make a Strength check against your spell save DC, striving to break the chains that bind it. On a success, the creature shatters the spectral bonds, ending the spell. On a failure, the chains tighten, a reminder of the relentless grip of the spell.
While maintaining concentration on this spell, the caster feels a kinship with the chains, as though they were an extension of their own being. This connection allows the caster to sense the struggle of the trapped creature, feeling its desperation and fear as a subtle, pulsating rhythm in their own blood.
The spell, however, does not come without risk. The use of the caster's own blood in the ritual links them to the fate of the chains. Should the chains be broken forcibly, the caster experiences a momentary backlash - a sharp, but fleeting, pain that echoes the breaking of the bond.

Crimson Bind is a spell favored by those who understand the true nature of power and control. It is not just a tool of battle, but a symbol of the unyielding force of will, a testament to the belief that sometimes, the strongest chains are those unseen, woven from the very fabric of the arcane.
