Abyssal Echoes Spell in Changing Stars | World Anvil

Abyssal Echoes

Abyssal Echoes
2nd-level necromancy, psychic
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 60 feet
Components: V, S, M (a fragment of bone from an abyssal creature and a drop of ink from a squid living in deep waters)
Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute

Abyssal Echoes summons forth the haunting and sorrowful resonance from the depths of the abyss, a realm of eternal darkness and unspoken terrors. When you cast this spell, you channel the essence of this dismal domain, releasing a wave of despairing energy that seeks to overwhelm the minds of those it touches.

Choose up to three creatures you can see within range. The spell emits a low, almost imperceptible droning sound that resonates with the darkest fears and doubts lurking in the targets' minds. Each creature targeted by the spell must make a Wisdom saving throw.

  On a failed save:
Despairing Resonance: The target is engulfed by the abyssal echoes, which sap its mental fortitude and strength of will. The creature suffers disadvantage on all ability checks, attack rolls, and saving throws. This effect symbolizes the oppressive weight of the abyss bearing down on the creature’s psyche. Ethereal Haunting: The target is haunted by ghostly visions and whispers, representing the lingering souls lost in the abyss. These visions are not only distressing but also distracting, causing the target to lose focus and falter in combat or other activities. On a successful save:
The creature resists the full brunt of the abyssal echoes but is left with an unsettling sense of dread and unease. It suffers disadvantage on its next ability check or attack roll before the end of its next turn as the residual effects of the spell linger. As the spellcaster, you can use your action on subsequent turns to intensify the abyssal echoes around one affected creature. The target must make another Wisdom saving throw, and on a failed save, its despair deepens, imposing a -1 penalty to its attack rolls and saving throws due to the increasing mental strain. This penalty can stack up to -3, representing the gradual erosion of the target’s mental defenses by the relentless abyssal resonance.

At Higher Levels: When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, you can target one additional creature for each slot level above 2nd. The additional targets must be within range and within 30 feet of each other when you cast the spell.
