Knowledge: Navigation

Travel from one end of the solar system is a common everyday reality in the world of 2840. In the vast voids of space ships zoom back and forth from main planetary hubs, and behind all of this action are Astronavigators, dedicated mathematicians and rocket scientists who plot the courses, estimate the fuel costs, and establish the itineraries. In short, the Astro-navigation skill is used any time a space ship needs to change course with some semblance of a plan. After all, fuel is expensive, time is money, some routes are safer than others, and getting lost can be a deadly mistake. As such, Astronavigators spend years calculating flight paths and gravity assisted sling shot maneuvers in simulation before they ever plan a sojourn for an actual space ship. A good Astronavigator can save a company millions, if not billions of credits in fuel and shipping costs. A bad Astronavigator can get people killed or a company bankrupt in a hurry. Common information rolls using Astronavigation include reading a star chart and plotting a ship’s relative position to other astronomical bodies. Astronavigation study rolls involve complex calculations usually resulting in several potential flight paths for speed, safety, and fuel conservation.

Ability Levels:

0 Ignorant: Looking at a star chart, or ship trajectory data gives you a headache. You don’t understand how all those blips and scratch marks mean anything.
1 High school: You can effectively read a star chart, plot a general course for a ship, and calculate your approximate position in the solar system.
2 College: You are use to the daily grind of assessing your ship’s relative position to other ships and planetary bodies.
3 Masters: You have an intuitive grasp on plotting vectors and accounting for gravitational constants when setting a course.
4 Doctorate: You realize the act of getting from here to there is just as much of an art as it is a science. You appreciate the subtle beauty of planning a course well.
5 Scholar: You are the quintessential ship navigator and your reputation precedes you. You easily see the strengths and weaknesses of the flight plans of others.
Possessed by:
Malkavians, Spacers, Fighter Pilots, Fuel Station Attendants, Convoy Organizers, Rocket Scientists, Space Cowboys, Pirates.
Sample Specialties:   Traveling Quickly, Traveling Safely, Fuel Conservation, Gravity Assisted Maneuvers, Deciphering Location, Plotting an Intercept Course.   Players may choose a specialty at level 4 and gain a second specialty at level 5.
