Knowledge: Mathematics

This is the ancient art of abstracting data numerically and manipulating it towards a wide range of practical and theoretical applications. Most human beings possess a rudimentary knowledge of Mathematics known as arithmetic which allows them to manipulate numbers using basic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. True mathematicians, however, are able to use a vast array of mathematical tools such as Algebra, Geometry, and Calculus to solve problems, calculate solutions, and express the nature of a concept abstractly. In gaming terms, the Mathematics Knowledge comes into play whenever a character wishes to process numeric data. This can often mean that a character may have to make an appropriate Mathematics + Intelligence roll in conjunction with other rolls. For example, a Technologist may have to calculate the heat produced by a weapon prototype [Intelligence + Mathematics] before attempting to design a heat resistant modification for the prototype [Intelligence + Hyper Technology]. A general rule of thumb is that a character wishing to make a practical application of a Knowledge such as Physics, Chemistry or Astronavigation, must first roll mathematics to make sure that they have accurate numbers and models before beginning. If a character is attempting to discover something new, they may roll the appropriate knowledge first and then check their answer for accuracy mathematically afterwards. Common information rolls using Mathematics include performing simple arithmetic, solving a small number of equations, or taking measurements of an object and calculating area and volume. Mathematics study rolls involve crunching data with complex systems of equations, organizing and calculating the data from an experiment, and creating new proofs and formula to explain otherwise undocumented phenomenon.

1 High School: You have mastered basic arithmetic and linear equations. You can identify common improper uses of math used by advertisers and politicians.
2 College: You have a handle on the core mathematical disciplines such as Algebra, Geometry, and Calculus. You are able to participate in complex science experiments and research studies as a result.
3 Masters: You can use Mathematics creatively to optimize many of your day to day processes. You frequently see solutions and applications of mathematical principles that others miss.
4 Doctorate: Your ability to think about the world mathematically and abstractly makes you a valuable resource for nearly any scientific or financial venture.
5 Scholar: You are on the cutting edge of hyper technology and science. The uninitiated may mistake the work you do for magic or pseudo-science.
