Attribute: Manipulation

Manipulation is the raw measure of your character's ability to use social pressure to get results--the feelings and desires of others be damned. As a character's Manipulation rating increases they become more skilled at amassing favors, winning debates, and having their cake and eating it too. Each Manipulation rating listed below includes a feat that your character could reasonably attempt with a little work and a successful plan. Manipulation is differentiated from Charisma in that Manipulation rolls are always appeals to use social pressure to get one's way--usually ending up resulting in resentment and dysfunctional relationships. Charisma, by contrast, is much more willing to compromise or even concede defeat if it salvages the friendship. The simple rule of thumb is that if the social roll would result in your character have a social advantage over another, it's a Manipulation roll.

Attribute Levels:

0 Abysmal: You are neuro-divergent to the point where you simply do not understand how society works. You only get your way if your desires align with the goals of others.
1 Poor: You have difficulty getting others to go along with your ideas. You succeed in applying social pressure only when the threat of punishment or embarrassment is apparent.
2 Average: You occasionally get your way or coerce folks who are on the fence about something. You succeed in applying social pressure by common tactics: money, lies, and appeals to logic.
3 Good: You were likely the child in the family who knew how to work the system. You succeed in applying social pressure by crafting elaborate misinformation, appeals to self-interest, and legalese.
4 Exceptional: You could easily be a grifter or a politician. A wide range of threats, lies, and social structures are in your arsenal to twist to your will.
5 Outstanding: You could be a mobster or crime boss. You almost always get your way, and even when you don't you always draw concessions for your troubles.
6 Paragon: Lawyers take notes, and Politicians come to your seminars to learn how to gain power and prestige. The world and its social norms are like clay in your hands.
7 Super Human: Your social and political machinations are so subtle that most people don't even realize what you are attempting to do or say until its too late.
Common Manipulation Based Rolls:
  • Manipulation + Subterfuge. When rolling to lie or spread misinformation.
  • Manipulation + Persuasion. When rolling to force a person to see things your way.
  • Manipulation + Leadership. When rolling to exercise authority over subordinates.
  • Manipulation + Intimidation. When rolling to browbeat or threaten others into submission.
  • Manipulation + Media. When rolling to meme or troll in an online setting.
  • Manipulation + Bureaucracy. When rolling to use society regulations to your advantage.
