Berann Valley

There are a few locations in Mistval where it is forbidden to construct a settlement; one such is the valley at the north end of the river Berann. Located among the highlands found just south of the Rughar Mountains, the valley contains many rare species and is considered one of the nation's most beautiful areas. A single small town, Glynfir, sits just outside the mouth of the valley, watching over the paths that lead into the gorge. Roughly three hours' walk upstream from the town is the Berann Falls, a set of waterfalls some 30 metres high where the river leaves the Rughar Mountains, and where one can find a natural ledge which allows a person to look down the entire valley. Words cannot do it justice, it is something that must be seen for oneself.

Geography

The Berann Valley follows the course of the Berann river from the Rughar mountains to the town Glynfir. It is a natural gorge formed by the river, with steep, earthy sides from which slender trees grow, forming a canopy over the valley. A few paths lead along the side of the river from Glynfir to the Berann Falls, though the river itself is on too much of a slant to be traversible by boat. The north half of the ravine also contains several pools of water unconnected to the river. By the falls, another path winds up the side of the gorge wall to a ledge from which the whole valley can be seen. The highlands around the valley are steep and travelling in them is ill-advised.

Fauna & Flora

The valley is home to several types of willow, which grow from the riverbanks and the walls of the gorge, covering the river and the paths. Many kinds of nesting bird make their homes in these trees, in relative safety from predators due to the valley's location. Valley herons are also a common sight around the river. In the pools found in the north area of the ravine, aquatic plants such as lilies sometimes grow, and rarely it is possible to see webfrogs there as well, the valley being one of the few places left in Mistval where they can still be found.
