The earliest known recorded history is an Undine work, preserved by their magic since its time of writing, some 300 years as we now count them before the event known as the Departure. It details the terms of their alliance with the Gnomes, they say, though outsiders such as myself are not welcome to read it. They similarly keep records which document their subsequent alliances to the Salamanders, and later the Sylphs, and it is clear that they hold these in extremely high regard, for no other record exists from that time save one: an incredibly finely inked picture of Tieclarre and Whisfelt, the Keys of Water and Ice that they gave to the early humans just before the Departure.   What happened since that time is known only in stories passed down by word of mouth until we learnt to put pen to paper. By that point, very little remained of the earliest days, with many stories as much fiction as fact. The Five Forgotten Tribes, the immensely powerful Mythicals, even the Four Elder Races are all but forgotten in some parts of the world. The Undines have records, but they are kept far below the ocean, inaccessible to mankind. The Gnomes outright refuse to allow us into their territory, let alone view their historical accounts, which I gather are an important part of their culture. Of the Salamanders and the Sylphs, no permanent residence for either has been found, and any insight they may have on the history of our world I will likely never see.   Twenty years ago, I made it my goal to discover as much of our past as I could. Now I look upon what meagre information I have, and I see how futile such a task is. I cannot possibly provide an accurate picture of the world as it was in the past. Instead, I will endeavour to show you the world as it is today. From Gardsel's bustling cities to the isolated temples in the Aurum Mountains, from the great plains of the Allanse to the most desolate of Droden's islands, from north to south and from east to west I plan to chronicle all that is worth knowing, so that no matter how much time should pass, history should never again be lost as it has been.   Preface to the book Chalice, written by Raymond Sunset, known to many as The Chronicler.
