Character Creation Guidelines

The lists below should help players come up with character concepts. Finer details of the character's backstory can be worked out in DM Office Hours!

Species/Race and Subspecies:

Canon Races: Any of these 'races' can be chosen with no qualms, however remember that there is custom lore surrounding certain races (denoted with an asterisk). The mechanics may not change, but the flavor text likely will.
  • Human
  • Variant Human (No Marks of Eberron)
  • Aasimar (Any variant)*
  • Tiefling (Any variant)
  • Kalashtar*
  • High Elf
  • Wood Elf

  • Half Orc*
  • Gnome*
  • Halfling*
  • Gith (both variants)*
  • Triton*
  • Aarakockra
  • Dragonborn
Semi-Canon Races: These races do technically exist in this canon, and even on the planet of Cetialma, but they remain a solid "Maybe" with regard to character creation for any number of reasons. If you have a really well crafted backstory idea or a very detailed reason as to why you'd want to play them, I'll consider it, but it'd be a good idea to have a backup idea as well.

Classes:

There are no class restrictions at the start of the game, however, with regard to multiclassing:   I am not opposed to your character multiclassing, but to avoid issues with min-maxing and balance, I'm going to ask that the following rules are respected:   You can only multiclass after reaching level 5 in your original class. You can only multiclass into one other class.   What this means is that you can take your first level in another class at Level 6. You can add as many levels in that secondary class as you'd like, even surpassing your original class, but you cannot add another class on top of it. For instance: You could have a rogue that, at level 6, you chose to multiclass into bard. You decide you like the bard playstyle better than rogue, so you take 7 levels in bard, making it your primary class. That is a perfectly acceptable option, however, you cannot multiclass again into something else like fighter.

Backgrounds:

There are no restrictions on the type of Background that can be chosen, however if you want to combine it with another or otherwise customize it, please save that for the DM Office Hours where we can discuss it in detail.

Other Requests:

As part of my efforts to avoid too many balancing issues with story and combat, I am going to try to have as little overlap with species/race and class as much as possible, so please have a couple different ideas for a character concept.   Once you have your concept(s), please message me on Discord to schedule your DM Office Hours!   I will be making custom tokens for the player characters, so when you've finalized a character, I will ask that you please make a Heroforge Mini (Link) and send me the link to that Mini using the website's "Share" feature. I can use these minis to make the previously mentioned token, as well as any other character art that comes to mind later on.
