A Cushy Gig

Mikasa was hyperventilating in the closet. Her beast had hid her behind Serina's mops and brooms before she had managed to put the vampiric soul to sleep. The door opened and she had to resist stirring the beast once again.   Serina was stunned, processing the new member of the royal guard. "Okay, I don't know what this fetish is called but you cannot be a mop."   Mikasa's fear was replaced by confusion. "Wh-what? I-I don't want to be a mop. What are you talking about?"   "Good!" Serina began filling up a bucket with water. "I'm not shaming any kinks, but hair is a terrible replacement for a mop head. It just smears around the dirt. You get dirty. The floors don't get clean. It's just overall a bad idea."   "What?? No!" Mikasa raised her hands and made a 'no' gesture. "I'm hiding! Not... some sort of kink thing."   "Yeah, clearly." Serina rolled her eyes. "You're literally in the closet. But in spite of what you might think, Lord Aros is pretty accepting. Of course, you can come out at your own pace. Just, know that you'll be accepted here."   "Wh..." The young vampire was confused again. "Oh! Oh no I'm not hiding like that. I... I'm scared of this place."   Serina pulled a mop from behind Mikasa's head and started dunking it in the water. "What's there to be scared of?"   "Well," Mikasa looked down and fidgeted. "I'm... I'm just new to all of this. How can I hope to guard this place? I've only ever fought people in training. I'm not ready for this at all." Tears began to form in Mikasa's eyes.   "Pfft." Serina snorted a laugh. "You're worried about people attacking this castle? Castle Aros? Personal home of the first vampire?"   "What do you mean?" Mikasa's asked.   "This castle is nearly ten thousand years old. And it's where the most dangerous thing in the Veilwood (hell, maybe in the whole Material) washes his underwear." Serina thinks for a second and corrects herself, "er, has his underwear washed I guess." She shakes her head and gets back to her point. "Attacking this castle is a fools errand. The heads of the noble houses fear our lord. Anyone with any sense would steer well clear of Lord Aros's ire."   Mikasa went pale. "I... I hadn't thought of that."   Serina rolls her eyes and picks up her bucket. "Don't worry about that either. This is a cushy gig. The only thing you have to worry about is getting too bored standing guard all day." She gives the young vampire a smile and nods to the door. "C'mon. Keep me company while I wash the east hall."   Mikasa was hyperventilating. She held Serina's arm over her shoulder. A burning beam crashed into the floor and she had to resist stirring her beast once again. The caregiver didn't have a smile to give, but nodded to the door. "C'mon. Keep me company while..." Serina's breath was shallow and her eyelids were heavy, "while I rest."
