Spectral Wind
In Cantarsus, there are only two known sources of magic. First, a being from another plane can provide powers to an individual through ritual, training, or patronage. For over a millenia, this was the only form of magic. More accurately, it was the only consistent form as throughout the land, an occasional blacksmith would produce a new sword or breastplate that was imbued with some magical essence, seemingly at random. Eventually, a new mineral was found: vitraxine. Through tireless research, Vitra was able to establish strict blacksmithing techniques to develop magical items with consistency.
Unfortunately, just like blacksmiths were able to unintentionally unleash the magic within this mineral, so too was nature. In the Shenohan Desert in southwestern Mourianji, a strong wind was not always as it seemed. Towering sandstorms filled with vitraxine dust generated over centuries of erosion, could disappear from sight suddenly only to appear once more miles later along its path.
Manifestation
On rare occasions, vitraxine dust, spun up and amongst itself in a sandstorm, can trigger some of the magical potential stored inside, most commonly producing an invisible field that enshrouds the storm. With no visual warning, animals and villagers alike were unable to prepare for the oncoming disaster. Strong winds blew across the desert constantly, but occasionally the winds would shift from nuisance to atrocity in an instant, suddenly rending flesh from bone of any living creature in its path. The wonton, violent nature of these invisble sandstorms led to stories of vengeful spirits living amonst the sands, driving the living from their dunes.
Today, the Libraries of Gnosi have definitively proven the true cause, but no one has ventured back into the desert where abandoned towns and villages still stand, half buried in sand. The only safe location in the desert is the city of Zafir which appears to have a calming affect on the winds near and around the oasis it is built upon.
Localization
This particular phenomena requires powerful winds and large amounts of vitraxine dust. Even with this environment, there is less than a five percent chance of producing anything other than a traditional sandstorm. It is possible to produce a more localized effect with vitraxine spellcasting though it does require a user of great skill.
