Wintershiven
This is the period of time between First Snow and The Thaw when the Basin essentially shuts down.
One of the main reasons the Basin essentially shuts down during this period has to do with the fact that no one wants to slog through the bitter cold and snow, and also, no one wants to be out and about while the Master of the Hunt is on the prowl. Every year, he selects one individual from the Basin's population and hunts him.
Unfortunately, he and his minions are not bashful when it comes to attacking any who would prevent them from achieving their goal, so other deaths have occurred.
The folk of the Basin learned very quickly just to stay out of the Master's way when he is on a hunt. It's good advice.
Officially, Wintershiven is measured from the day of First Snow in the courtyard in the Palace of the First King (which now houses the People's Congress, Council of Seven), to the time when the snow melts from the courtyard.
The Basin is, however, a very large place, so in practice, every city, town, village, thorp, dorf and hamlet marks the beginning and end of Wintershiven based on their local conditions.
