Tad Orthok

Tad Orthok was a dashing young soldier for hire who fell afoul of that most cursed of emotions: love.
He was in between jobs, hanging out at a spaceport, when the most stunning woman he'd ever seen walked into the cantina. She was breathtaking, confident, smart, and the way she handled Shar Kalo when he got handsy was pretty darned hot. It was adoration at first sight. 
For him.
Shalli Brath, as he discovered was her name, was not terribly interested in him. By her own words, he was rather annoying. Her aloof treatment of him only served to fan the flames of his desire. Fortunately for him, he cooled his ardor significantly when she knocked him out and left him in an alley, whereupon he was robbed by a pack of urchins.
His dignity so shattered, he gave up on his dreams. This, naturally, was the moment when Tad was hired to protect her for a series of meetings. Finally in his element, he was able to do his job well, and saved her life. He even managed to save her dress. Now that Tad was more than just a nagging nuisance, Shalli saw his better qualities and kissed him. Which led to...other things.
They had a whirlwind romance, once it began. He was only on planet half the time, constantly popping away for jobs, and her own job kept her busy so that half the time they couldn't meet, but the moments they could catch were deep in passion and connection. Tad loved her.
And then she vanished. Overnight, while he was off planet, and not a single person could give him any information as to where she had gone. Most of her possessions were still there, her apartment rent paid. No signs of a struggle or anything like that. She was just gone.
He's still haunted by what might have happened to her and blames himself for her disappearance. Whether it was something he did to hurt her and force her to leave, or whether one of the battles he fought had come to her doorstep, he could have done more to protect her. He still looks for her, in the hope that he didn't somehow cost her life.

Shalli Brath is in fact Cayali Tranne (or at least, that's the name she's currently using), a con artist who was there to trick a wealthy family into giving her money so she could supposedly save their son. She ducked out when the con reached its conclusion. She did care for Tad, but she cared about not being caught a lot more.
