Worldbuilding Meta: Cheatsheet

Written by WillowRiver

Basic Summary

Cameryth is a world where the magical and the mundane are constantly mixing and it's very easy to accidentally end up on an adventure. Or a pirate ship.

Basic Setting

  • Genre(s): High Fantasy with Adventure and Pirates
  • Tech Level: Depends where you go, but more or less equivalent to very early industrial revolution tech overall. Magic supplements and replaces a lot of things as well.
  • Magic Level: Very magic. There's the techy magic system of Arcane Mages, the laissez-faire up-to-interpretation magic of Witches, and the absolutely bonkers magic inherent to Fey, as well as the species-specific magics of various Mythfolk.

Motivation Behind the World

  1. The world was made to expand the world of our novel.
  2. It's meant to be a fun adventure that sometimes dips into real and serious issues.
  3. Reality exists and problems still need to be dealt with, but not everything is terrible.

Scale

Currently a large portion of a larger world. Mostly confined to the areas where the Blue Mariner sails.

Themes

There are a lot that one could argue for both the novel and for the world as a whole, but these are some of the main ones.
Story Themes
  • Acceptance and understanding of self
  • Living between two worlds
  • Found family
  • Trauma
World Themes
  • Wonder
  • Change
  • Tradition and Progress
  • Fun

Mood

  • General story mood is light with dark undertones that will need to be addressed.
  • Sequel story mood will likely be darker as serious issues really need to be addressed.
  • Overall world mood is fairly optimistic. Things aren't perfect, but they're generally getting better where it is bad.

Conflicts to Explore

  • The Lasposan Empire is looking to start absorbing other nations into itself again
  • Pirates are everywhere and a lot of them cause trouble for nations and normal people
  • Laspos is hunting down all pirates
  • While the witch hunts are dying down in most nations, they never really ended in others
  • Fey in Lumin can and will cause trouble if they so choose
  • The Doldrums, a large expanse of water where neither wind nor current flows to move a ship along
  • Minor conflicts between sea spirits
So if you're looking for vibes The Blue Mariner is like... contemporary (not tolkein-esque) fantasy with a sort of, sea shanty vibe. Almost like a story you hear third and fourth hand, but not necessarily a myth or legend. Like the kind of story where something insane happens, but you just kind of accept it because life is already so weird, yanno? Like, living on the coast and watching ships come in from the sea and listening to locals tell the tourists ghost stories.
