Loss of Limb

Technically, anyone can lose an arm or leg; there are any number of professions dangerous enough to cause or necessitate this. It is common belief, however, that losing one's extremities is a condition mostly limited to those of middle-age or older as bones become more brittle and natural healing processes are slowed and weakened greatly. Some other medical conditions associated with age can require limbs to be amputated in order to preserve the health of the rest of the body.   Magical healing is usually employed to prevent such events, but even that is limited and not everyone has a mage living nearby. Arcane Magic can only enhance the body's natural healing ability, and the more advanced one is in years, the less effective the healing is. Even more than that, limbs lost in an are difficult to reattach and usually have lingering pain and mobility issues.   Missing a limb can be very inconvenient, however, so most amputees are taken to a prosthesis maker. While there are simple wooden prosthetics available, none of them can compare to those enhanced with magic. Prosthesis Making itself is a specialized branch of Medical Magic which requires precision and control as magic must be weaved into the piece itself during fabrication. These Magical Prosthetics are either made to order, or at the very least are adjusted to fit the customer's sizing and specifications.

Causes

Loss of limb can be caused by anything from workplace hazards, accidents, degenerative medical conditions, amputation, and far more things than one could list. In the case of amputation, this is commonly done when there is either no doctor trained in medical magic or because the limb in question is too badly damaged to be healed properly even by magic.

Treatment

Some patients, particularly older ones who no longer work for a living and those of a poorer class, will choose to only have the most basic of mobility aids. A wheeled chair is common for elderly folks, or a simple wooden limb and a cane or crutches for those who still need to get around on their own but lack the money for a magical replacement. Poorer folks will simply live with a missing arm and learn to adjust.   Most working folks, however, will go to see a prosthesis maker for a magical prosthetic instead. As these are meant to function exactly as the missing limb, and can come in a variety of materials for either practical or aesthetic purposes, they are the popular option among those who can afford them.
