Kiptari Leather

Properties

Material Characteristics

The material looks very similar to tanned leather, though it is significantly more durable even before being treated. It is most well known for being flexible and resistant to wear, as well as being mildly fire resistant.

Physical & Chemical Properties

In addition to being resistant to flames and general wear, kiptari leather is also said to imbue words with magical power, specifically within a book bound in the material. This makes it a popular cover material for grimoires and spellbooks.

Origin & Source

Kiptari are skinned for this material. Being fairly small, however, a great number of them is needed for anything significant.

History & Usage

Everyday use

Kiptari leather is most commonly used as cover material for books or for protecting sensitive items during travel. It can also be used for hinges and belts, though this is less common as ordinary leather is usually much easier to get ahold of.   Some people use kiptari leather to make armour, but because the creatures are so small, such a feat isn't really feasable for a being of average human size, though it is quite useful as gloves for smiths and foundrymen.

Refinement

Unlike normal leather, kiptari leather must go through a special process to nullify the poison that is infused through the kiptari's body as well as balance the magics present. This can only be done by trained specialists who understand the flux of magic and is absolutely not to be attempted by the average layman unless they want to potentially lose skin or worse.

Distribution

Trade & Market

The raw material is more commonly found in places like Barque (known for its textile work) or in settlements around the kiptari's natural environment, such as some villages in Cyrina.   The largest importer of kiptari leather is Lumin, most of it being used towards the magic college located within its borders.

Law & Regulation

In Lumin, the purchasing of kiptari leather is heavily restricted, due to lingering fears of witches. For the most part, only students and professors at the magic college and certain trusted officials are legally allowed to buy the material in any great quantity.
