I Need You To Stay

A scrapped snippet based on STAY by No Resolve

It was a beautiful night out. The stars were as visible as they could be in the city - that is to say, not very visible - and there wasn’t a cloud in sight. There was a nice breeze keeping the hot and humid air moving. He shouldn’t be wearing a hoodie in this weather, especially after having to change out of one sweat-soaked clothing item so far. But he needed the comfort and sense of calm that the hoodie gave him.

“I will find you again my ass. It’s been ten whole years and I haven’t seen hide nor hair of the bastard.” It’s not like Icarus misses him or anything, with his infectious laughter and ability to light up any room he was in… Okay, maybe he did miss the bitch just a bit.

But it’s been ten long years…

Icarus took another drink of the Monster as he walked to the edge of the roof. Standing up here, alone, he felt free. He felt like he could do anything, like he could make the world bend to his will.

Who knows, maybe he could…

Icarus took one last look at the sleeping city beneath him before setting himself on the ledge. The best part of this particular apartment building is that it is old. Granted, the dust and decay weren’t great, but the rooftop access and lack of safety rails made up for it. Icarus just wanted to be able to sit on the ledge, dangling his feet 20 stories over the roads below him. Was that too much to ask?

The fresh air was much needed tonight, and with the prospect of having a way to move his plan forward Icarus was in high hopes. He didn’t need anything dragging down his mood, much less a memory of a boy he used to know. He raised his hand, idly tracing the scar on his cheek. The one that the boy was so careful not to touch before. He knew why; when it was fresh the scar looked brutal. Now, though, it has healed. The skin was still rough and ragged, but it doesn’t hurt anymore.

Icarus was snapped out of his thoughts by the sound of the roof door swinging open. Dropping his hand, he quickly looked towards where the sound had come from. He was not prepared to see another human being at the moment, but it looked like the universe had decided he was.

He thought he recognized the person standing there, but that wasn’t possible. The blonde curls and sun-tanned skin reminded him of… No, he couldn’t be here.

Eyes wide in slowly processing shock, Icarus gaped at the figure that had come to a stop in front of him. He could see the shimmer of tears in his eyes as the person said, “You know, I can't find nobody else as good as you.”

His breath caught in his throat. This wasn’t possible. He couldn’t be here. And yet, he was.

Icarus let out a chuckle as a smile crept across his face. A smile that was mirrored by the blinding radiance of a grin on the face in front of him.

He couldn’t move fast enough as he pushed himself up from the edge of the roof and towards his sunshine. He may or may not have tripped over thin air in the process, but that was for Icarus and the heavens to know.

The chill breeze of the early fall morning no longer mattered to Icarus as he entangled himself within the limbs of his own personal sun. He took a steadying breath. This was too much, especially after the nightmare he had woken up from.

“You’re here.”

“I am, Birdie. I’m finally here.”

Tears welled in Icarus’ eyes as his sunshine spoke. He’s finally here.

Forcing his voice to work without breaking, he whispered, “I need you to stay… I’ll be fucked up if you can’t be right here.”

Icarus was no longer alone on the roof, and yet he felt more free than he had at any point in the past ten years. There was a lot that they had to talk about, but with his Sunshine by his side, Icarus could move the heavens.
