Description
The Arcane Cannon, or just cannon, is a long metal tube with one end open, and one end that is hinged and closes with a tight seal. These weapons are meant for grand scale destruction. They use a combination of runes that takes flammable substances such as wood and transmutes it into an explosion which is able to be contained within the metal cylinder, known as the barrel. Mages took many years to get the exact sequences right, and the metal it’s made of needs to be specially made. Every few uses of the device requires the inscribed runes to be replaced, which, through years of trial and research, has been turned into a consumable plate that is mass produced. Due to runic restrictions, the runes are typically carved into stones and put into the barrel in a slot on the hinged end, which is then replaced when the stone inevitably breaks.
These cannons launch balls of metal or stone, or scrap pieces of metal or loose rocks, and propel them to great speeds. Because of their weight and size restrictions due to runic requirements, these cannons are typically mounted on walls, though I’ve seen some that have been attached to large wheels to shoot more mobile targets. While they do not achieve the same level as one can reach with proper magic, because of their capability to be mass produced, it is one of the only good offenses that humanity has against the abominations.
It’s rumored that during the Eldritch Crusades, prototypes of these devices were used in order to slay the once Progenitor. These rumors may be just that, though the Husk’s damaged flesh makes me believe that something more than mere catapults and trebuchets played their parts. These siege engines tend to be inaccurate and have a drastic spread, while these arcane cannons have a much tighter spread when firing loose material.
