The Two Siblings
The Olphis Moon casts a pale blue light over Calderon, representing tranquility and peace. It is associated with motherhood, companionship, and fertility. The smaller but brighter Ambris Moon also lights up Calderon, but with a warm, golden glow. It is associated with life, discovery, and comradery. It represents joy and hope. The two moons, known as "The Siblings," circle Calderon, with Ambris taking twice a month to complete a cycle. Olphis circles twice and a third around Calderon in the span of a year.
Olphis, the older sister, eclipses the sun once a cycle, whereas Ambris never passes the sun. There is a saying regarding Ambris that is used to say something will never happen. When a nervous boy keeps putting off confessing to the girl of his wishes or when the town drunk goes another week without paying his tab, people often quote "It'll happen at the Ambris Eclipse".
Although Ambris never passes the sun, once every eight years it lines up perfectly to be framed by the Three Founders. The Three Founders are a trio of bright stars that form an isosceles triangle in the night sky. Each star represents one of the three main races of Calderon; dwarves, dreamers, and humans. Each one shines at a different brightness, causing disagreement between the races as to which star corresponds to which race. The rare phenomenon of Ambris passing between the Three Founders is seen as a night of opportunity and good luck, because of which, more proposals are offered on that night than any other, whether the timing is right or not. Ironically, the morning after has more regrets, heartbreak, and day drinking than any other day of the year.
