Void Wisp Species in Cairne | World Anvil

Void Wisp

"Small was the touch that slew the hero."

A tiny anomaly born of the Blighted Lands, the Void Wisp is an almost comical creature, were it not for the potential it contains to harm and kill. This creature drifts aimlessly across the Outlands in the same way a jellyfish might drift through the ocean, absorbing the positive energy of any unwary or unwitting victims it happens upon.

Basic Information

Anatomy

A small point of shadow in the gloom, this creature appears as a wispy orb floating just a few feet off of the ground. Small black tendrils wave listlessly outward from its body, following the motion of the creature's movement. It is quite small, most of them only manifesting as a fist sized entity, though both smaller and slightly larger ones have been reported. One of the easily more dangerous aspects of this creature is the fact that it is very hard to see a fist sized ball of shadow in the gloom of the Outlands. The creature maintains passive stealth (due to it being silent, hovering, and small) of 20.

Ecology and Habitats

Luckily for the peoples of the Outlands, these creatures generally move in solitary ways, though there have been rumors of a larger mass of them that drift along within the confines of the Blighted Lands. They do not actively seek food nor do they actively avoid conflict either, seemingly oblivious to the world around them until they come into contact with something. Recorded incidents of them drifting into populated areas and causing a great degree of harm show no discernable pattern to they way they move in such situations, but they have left a lasting mark on the Outland settlements, leading to most towns being ringed with organic webbing or fencework usually made from hide or similar materials, as such things will trigger the explosive reaction of the creatures alerting the inhabitants of their presence. These things do not stop or deter the advance of the Void Wisp, but merely allow the people within to prepare and avoid it if possible.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

The Void Wisp, when not actively engaged, drifts along the unseen lay line currents that cross back and forth beneath the surface of Cairne. Its natural drive to seek positive energy makes it especially sensitive to these currents and allows it to navigate effortlessly along in ways that lead to where the living occupants of the Outlands unwittingly gravitate.   Their awareness grants them the uncanny ability to "see" through all forms of darkness and even detect otherwise invisible creatures.
