Yawning Portal

Located deep in the sewers this place is kept secret by the thieves guild. Only those who are closely working with the guild are permitted to enter this place. It is a three story structure. People enter onto the top floor from the sewers above. The third and second floors have balconies showing the deep, dark hole in the center of the first floor. A 30' diameter circular hole leads to a 300' drop. The only way down is by a creaky elevator that can only hold 3 people max.
There walls and floors are all made of stone, the Yawning Portal is sparsely decorated, with a few wooden table and stools per floor. On the bottom floor is a bar with only a few liquors and ales. The people are not there to make friends or have good drink, but to hide from the surface, make business arrangements with other thieves, or venture into the underdark.
The elevator down can only be controlled from someone at the top with a hand crank. Each person going down must pay 50g to the bartender.

History

It is clear the ancient druids built this but nobody knows why they would create a tunnel to the Underdark.

Archmage of Black Staff Tower, Locus, knows about the thieves guild and their pathway to the underdark in the sewers. As a high elf he has been keeping tabs on the kidnappings in the area and has deduced their location to be in the sewers.
