Scope

The motivation behind building Caeloc

The world is being constructed to run counter to the world I crafted for my young daughters to play in. Their world is filled with lush flourishing magic and mystical creatures. Yet, that magic had to of come from somewhere~   I want to provide a world that has a bit of grit to it but still a vast sense of wonder as players can take to the skies. Wild and free. To take on massive beasts, nature itself, and the others who wish to claim these skies for their own.

The goal of the project

I am hoping to finally get a sense of fulfilment after letting my previous world crash and burn. A blank slate, one only touched by the tempest of the skies and the sense of adventure.

Caeloc's Unique Selling point

The primary source of transportation are airborn vehicles. These range greatly in size and purpose and help drive the world. This has allowed for the common individual to take flight and explore beyond the boundaries of their land of birth/residency. Children dream of exploring the vast unknowns while powerful political figures amass armadas of airships to wage warfare in the skies.

Theme

Genre

The overall genre falls between "steampunk" and "dieselpunk." The former allows for a sense of fantasy as magic and science is happily married off and items have design over function. The later is the opposite where it treads torwards Sci-fi and values function over design.   Due to my roots in High Fantasy it has become painfully obvious I will need some level of sci-fi in this to explain some concepts.

Reader Experience

I would like for my audience, readers and players alike; to have a mixed sense of wanderlust and defiance. Defiance at the hand fate has dealt them and a drive to fix it. Whether it is just for their own personal salvation or the salvation of all.

Reader Tone

The world is dying. Lands are falling and resources are becoming scarce. For the average person, life is a bit rough but do-able. As soon as you pull back into a state-wide view, however, all the issues are plain to see.
Thus, we'll mark this as a more darker tone.

Recurring Themes

  1. Mighty beasts hide in the clouds and islands that dot the horizon, a scourge to explorers and military bodies alike
  2. The land and its machinary is starting to fail. Resources that are just not there are needed to keep going.
  3. Just about anyone can obtain an aircraft. Although, the skies are not as free as they seem.

Character Agency

I would like to grant as much character agency as possible. I find players tend to latch on to a setting more when they feel they have had a part in it.

Focus

Class Relations   The land I intend to welcome the audience to has a caste system that has remained solid for the past two centuries. The chasm between the various castes is wide and incredibly difficult to surmount. This has made those try to do all they can to stay away from those they view beneath them.
Technology Influence   It goes without saying that technology is a heavy point in a 'punk' type genre. With sky ships dotting the skies and the ability to obtain a vessel even if you're poor (at a heavy cost) the mind always needs to return back to the pros/cons of such technology being available.
Finite resources   There is an arms race going on. Whether that is in the fore-front or not is a toss-up. The world is dying. There are only so many resources left to it. This causes a great source of conflict as those who were left above fight for what is left.

Drama

The Republic of Fevlin fell from the skies after it ran out of fuel. This event fueled the current drive for more Aerlin, as well as conspiracies that foul play was involved.
The wet season has erroded away a lot of good soil. The crops that have grown have been inferior in quality and quanitity. We cannot go another year like this.
The nobles of Orri's Hope have been demanding a heightened toll on the ships that dock there before heading to the Wilds. They claim all of it will go to the citizens. Yet, the citizens have become even more impoverished in the past few years.
Something has been hiding in the clouds and striking down mighty ships along the northern current. This is forcing many to detour through wild air, where pirates tend to roam.
The God-Queen of Barbahlia is the most motivated of the four ruling bodies to hunt down the Gigas of the Wild. Rumors have it the Empire is moving into the wild territory to expand its reach.
