Arc Two: Session Two
General Summary
Liz takes Casey home, to a loft they rent above a nearby house. It begins to rain. Helping them up the stairs, Casey can't understand why the house would have something to do with their sister, but not have anything to do with Liz's sister. They tell Liz they think other people went with them when they searched that house before, though they cannot remember. As Liz goes to leave, Casey offers her an umbrella that she takes. Outside, Liz calls Therese and then heads to the library.
At the library, Liz does more research. She learns about another house of a similar style being condemned and others of the sort that were never built. Second, she finds more information on Casey's sister, Nicola Barnett. While having gone missing two years before Isabelle, she was the same age as Liz's sister when she disappeared. She also learns about another person in a portrait, Miley Bates, who went missing two years ago. Finally, Liz looks into a hypnotist, wondering if that would help Casey remember what they have forgotten.
Returning to Odd Jobs, Liz gets a message from Owen. The woman found in the bathtub was Vilde Nyland, who went missing five years ago when she was twenty one.
Cal, Avery and Sting arrive at East Grow. Wandering in the store, they find In-soo. They don't find any sign of spider webs, though they hear the rain beating off the roof. Sting feels restless, but can't tell why until Avery feeds him more energy, at which point he says that something has arrived. Cal realizes it has something to do with the increasing storm. Knowing they can't stay here and they aren't likely able to convince In-soo to leave in the middle of her shift, Cal suggests hitting the fire alarm. Avery starts an actual small fire and everyone heads out into the pouring rain. Outside they find where In-soo has holed up and debate what they might say to get her to come with them. None of them can agree on a way that would work best, when Avery's phone goes off.
Maud heads down into the basement to tell Liz about how bad the storm is becoming. The Shell is likely to flood, in which case no one will be able to cross either of the bridges. Up on the main floor, Liz witnesses the storm and calls both Owen and Therese to check on them before she calls Avery. They catch each other up, and Liz suggests perhaps telling her the truth or putting some magical protection on her. With that in mind, Avery tries to do so and succeeds. With that in mind, they decide to head back to Odd Jobs to find out something to do about the crazy weather. Liz begins examining the books herself, finding nothing as she searches. Unable to get transportation, Avery and Cal go by foot to cross the bridges before it is too late. Reaching the northern bridge, the fog becomes thick, and they only see one figure. A tall humanoid silhouette, which causes a scratching feeling at both of their minds - though Sting takes the brunt of it to protect Avery. Cal gets a bit closer, planning already to hit it with their revolver, when the scent of decay almost makes them vomit. They manage to resist the sensation and shoot. It staggers, then runs at them. Cal sees it is a swollen corpse, seven feet tall and blue-black skin. It slams Cal into the side of the bridge. Cal self-heals, before trying to bite the corpse. It bites back. Avery pulls Sting out again, debating what to do, as Sting suggests banishing it. Avery successfully does so, the dagger embedding itself into the corpse, making it disperse in a cloud. Avery rushes over to Cal, trying to heal them. On their second attempt they manage to mend a little bit of Cal's damage, but they hurt themselves as well. Avery calls an ambulance and while it is still raining, it isn't nearly as hard as before and it eventually arrives.
At the hospital, Avery calls Liz to tell her what happened. Liz knows from everything she searched through that there was no mention of anything like they have described within all the books Liz searched through. Avery feeds energy back into the dagger. He remains quiet when other people are in the room. As Cal rouses, Avery goes to find where their clothes went. The hospital is against Cal leaving so soon, but they can't really stop them as they are able to walk out. Liz heads back upstairs again, finding Maud pacing and on the phone. Liz makes her some coffee before heading back downstairs. She texts Casey and waits for the other two to return to Odd Jobs, where Cal falls asleep on one of the cots. Liz, Avery and Sting debate their next step.
