The Hedge of Buena Vista

The Hedge is the border realm between the mortal world and Arcadia, fueled by the dreams of humans. Buena Vista's founding as a "city of tomorrow" inspired a number of science fiction hopes that reshaped the local region of the Hedge to be science fantasy flavored.

Features of Buena Vista's Hedge

Tech-friendly

Unlike many other regions of the Hedge, mortal technology maintains a degree of reliability around Buena Vista, though as one gets closer to Arcadia, its utility declines as normal. It is still generally recommended to avoid bringing computerized devices into the Hedge, as some local hobgoblins have developed magical methods of hacking that more closely follow story logic, rather than "real" hacking.

Airy Water

Being on the Gulf of New Mexico, this region of the Hedge includes a coast and ocean. Some regions of this mirror Gulf obey a law of hospitality, allowing air breathers to exist there without fear of drowning or high water pressure. Aquatic fae often include this as a feature of their Hollows. This is available as a Hollow feature worth one dot in the Hollow merit.

BriarNet Ports

With the advent of the internet, the Hedge has formed its own counterpart, commonly referred to as the BriarNet by the Crystalline Web. The free company does its best to control the access points, but any being who knows the key (often a password) can enter the Briar Net from one of these ports, temporarily converting them into a data-based being. Navigating the BriarNet uses similar rules for navigating the Hedge, though without special abilities dealing with computers, a Changeling's ability to influence mundane computers through the BriarNet are typically limited.

The Asteroid Thicket

Space has long fascinated humanity, and traveling upward in Buena Vista's Hedge leads to a region of Thorns in the form of a dense belt of jagged asteroids. While the environment is often harsh, it remains more hospitable than true outer space, usually only requiring a breathing aparatus in empty or toxic regions, while individual asteroids frequently have gravity and atmosphere. The Thicket hosts its own ecology of "alien" hobgoblins who adapted to these circumstances. A being who successfully navigates their way through the Asteroid Thicket can find the Wishing Roads (Kith and Kin, page XX) and potentially use them to travel to stranger places, including other planets in the mortal plane. Some courageous (and foolish) hobgoblins are known to cobble together Glamour-fueled spacecraft to forage and mine exotic materials from the asteroids.
